I figure for the first year while I'm home as long as I have a mid-size SUV we are fine? My husband drives a small 4 door commuter car (Nissan Versa). Eventually we will trade it for the big SUV like the Pilot, but with the cost of gas it seems wise to stay this way? How do you you all work it?
Re: Do you and spouse drive SUV/vans?
We have a commuter car - Hyundai Elantra and a Nissan Quest minivan for when we are doing things with the babies.
ETA: The infant car seats didn't really fit in the hyundai - DH and I are both tall (5'9" and 6'3"). Convertibles fit a bit better but we're still a bit short on leg room. Hence the van, it's more comfy for everyone.
I have a quest as well and DH just got a new Malibu. We can all fit in the Malibu now, but when the boys come we will strictly use the van.
When his lease is up we are going to decide whether to get another car and then lease a Tahoe/suburban or keep the van as its paid off and lease a Tahoe/suburban. Mainly because we camp and we will need to get camper and of course something to pull it with.
You should be fine. For the first year I kept my Hyundai Santa Fe (mid-size SUV). DH has a Mazda6 sedan. I think we've only put the babies in his car once or twice, when my car was in the shop, but they fit fine in both the infant seats and the RF convertables. At 13 months we traded my SUV in for a Toyota Sienna becuase we needed more room for all of us, plus all of our stuff when we take some longer road trips this summer. And the non-sliding doors were driving me nuts in parking lots.
We have one car. It's a Pontiac Vibe. Works fine for now.

But we have no problems using the Accord either. I actually want to downsize from our Acadia. Still an SUV but not as big.
I'm a huge car snob, and have really resisted getting a van. But, everyone I know who has one loves them.
I'd still be driving my little 2-door if there had been anyway to make it work!
I'm driving a 4-door BMW 3-series sedan (all 3 car seats are crammed into the backseat!). I had to be careful when selecting car seats and finding a double stroller that would fit in the trunk, but it works.
DH has a VW Jetta. But luckily he doesn't have to drive to work often because his compony provides commuter shuttles. We are considering trading in the VW for a 3rd row SUV because it would make trips easier, and we want something with towing capacity.
We have a full size SUV (Toyota Sequoia). It's our main vehicle and the only one our twins really know.
We have 2 other vehicles that are paid off. A Z71 extended cab truck for when we want to go 4-wheeling (the carseats fit ok in it, but at the expense of some leg room for DH and I) and we also have a little cavalier that we use as a comuter car for the gas mileage, but we would never put them in there unless we absolutley had too.
