TTC After a Loss

Any Words of Wisdom?

I already posted this in "Trouble TTC" but took someone's advice and posted it here also.  Sorry for the redundancy!

I'll try to keep a long story short.  My husband and I are both 29 years old and we started trying in March 2011. The first cycle resulted in a chemical pregnancy.  We FINALLY got pregnant again in October 2011.  At my 8 week appointment I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum and had a D&C a couple weeks later.  I've been given progesterone pills to help support the next pregnancy.  I only tried that for one cycle.  I didn't feel comfortable that the doctor did no testing and just prescribed the progesterone.  The only advice I have rec'd from my doctor is to keep trying, that my chances are good.  Now that I've been trying for over a year, I'm becoming a basket case.  I have no idea if I should be seeking another opinion or requesting an RE or demanding more from my doctor? Any suggestions?  I'm a little nervous about too much medical intervention but worried that I'm wasting precious time also.  I know there are ladies that have been through SO much worse, but there isn't a lot of advice out there for someone under 30 who doesn't seem to have any obvious health issues.  Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Re: Any Words of Wisdom?

  • Definitely see an RE!  They will run the tests that you need and you can decide how much medical intervention that you need/want from an informed position.

ETA: I read your dates wrong.  Petra is right, you might not need an RE, but you definitely need a new OB.

I wouldn't jump to an RE just yet (6 months between pregnancies isn't bad), but GET THEE TO A NEW OB pronto, sister. You need very basic testing at minimum. CD3 panel to check your thyroid and baseline, and then a 7DPO progesterone level.

And, welcome to the board. I am sorry for your losses.

Welsome and sorry for your losses. I hope you find comfort and support here.

Yes I agree with Petra. 6 months between isn't bad. I am a year and a half since my loss. GL sweets.

  • Welcome, I am sorry for your losses.  Do not undermine how bad you have had it- sure when looking at it from the outside someones pain may look 'worse' than others, but everyone's pain is their own, and very real, no matter the road you've travelled.  It is real to you, don't apologize!

I would head to a RE at this point.  You've been TTC for over a year I would call your OB and ask for a referral.  If your insurance doesn't require it or the REs office, you could also call in yourself.  Even if you have no obvious medical issues, you could have hormonal imbalances or YH could have a low count, etc.  You never know until you get it checked out.  The most irregular reproductive issues can very well manifest themselves in very regular presentations.

    Good luck!

Ditto. Six months to conceive at your age does not warrant seeing a fertility specialist at this point; however the new OB and all the basic bloodwork should be done. Did your OB tell you what your progesterone level was prior to prescribing it for you? It won't hurt you to stay on it, but to be proactive and healthiest for your next attempt at pregnancy, it's probably a very good idea to have your progesterone levels (and all the rest of the stuff Petra mentioned) monitored.

    As far as advice:

    1. If you don't currently chart, start. It can give you a lot of great information about what your body is or isn't doing as well as give you the tools you need when talking to an OB or RE.

    2. Fire your OB and get a new one. If you want further testing and they aren't facilitating that for you, and instead just throwing drugs at you that you may or may not need, it's time to go. Yeah, you're "young" and it hasn't take that "long" but if there is something else factoring into the situation better to know sooner rather that later.

     3. Start doing research on if your insurance covers an RE. If you aren't satisfied with the first two steps than see the RE.

  • Thank you (and everyone!) for the quick responses.  It has comforted me so much! I've never posted anything before, but this has been a great help.

I am going to get a second opinion and see if I can't get some basic testing done, then we'll see if the RE is necessary or not.

To answer a question above, no my OB never tested progesterone.

I wish all you ladies the best!
