Pre-School and Daycare

Anyone else's Preschooler always pick something up at the Dr's?

Lately it seems like every time I take my DS (who is 3) to the pedi, he ends up sick.  After his three year well-child, he picked up a cold that turned into an ear infection.  I took him to the Dr. for the ear infection and he picked up foot in mouth disease.  Last week, he had to tag along to his sister's one week well-baby visit and now has a cold.  DS has not been in preschool or daycare yet and has had 12 colds this year as he has been around a lot more kids his age.....

My kids went to daycare and were always around other kids at daycare or with other family members or friends.  Regardless of where they catch things, all kids will go through the phase of getting sick a lot as they need to build up their immunityh to all of this stuff.  I would rather have it done now than when the kids start kindergarten.  Everyone I know has gone through it at some point in their kids lives as soon as they start getting out and about more at playdates or daycare/preschool.

  • Does your pedi have separate sick and well waiting rooms?  Ours has separate rooms to wait in, and separate rooms that you are seen in (so a sick kid isn't seen in one room, and then a well kid put in the room next).  That isn't going to prevent every sickness, but I'm sure it cuts down a bit.

ETA: kids can also pick up colds at the grocery store, playground etc. unless you keep them in a bubble they are going to get sick, we have been fortunate enough to avoid most of the school "breakouts".

I don't let my kids play with the toys and books that the pedi's office has out in the waiting room and in the exam room.  Instead, I bring a big bag of small toys (ex. cars), coloring books, crayons, story books, etc. for them to play with, and then we use sanitizer gel throughout the visit and afterwards.  I've always done this, but it's more important now that we have someone in our family that has a suppressed immune system.

ETA: I'm not saying that you were doing anything wrong or that you weren't doing this already.  Sorry!  Just trying to throw another idea out there and in a rush.
