Working Moms

How did you find a PT or WFH position if not at your current company?

I commute 2.5 hrs a day and feel like I barely spend time with my son.  My boss is extremly flexible...work from home 1 day a week and sometimes more if my son has dr appointments, etc....I could probably stay at home, but its a lot of pressue on my husband.  Ideally I'd like to work PT or PT from home.  I just dont' know how to begin searching...interested in hearing anyone else's experiences in a search like this....

  • I found my old pt gig through indeed.com. It's a good source for being able to search from many different job boards at once.

I found mine because a mutual friend in the industry introduced me to my current boss during a professional conference.

  • I'm getting on this bandwagon.

The commute is just getting to me!

  • Have you started with your current company?  It's possible that your company might be able to accommodate PT...you never know until you ask.

I was looking for a WFH position and searched everywhere. Finally found it by focusing on companies that allow a large portion of their employees to WFH and then applied on their website. Not sure what you do, but look at healthcare companies, a lot of them allow remote workers. I am in marketing and my company has over 40% of employees at home due to cost savings.

I work 3 days a week.  I got my current position by calling up an old co-worker who had started his own company and asking if he wanted me to work for him.
  • I simply just asked if the job could be done from home, and it was a part time position to begin with.  They said yes, and that is how it went!  Prior to that, I worked for myself as a consultant and could do whatever I wanted.

  • It isn't that easy to find a legit work at home job.

Why don't you ask your boss if you can work from home all the time. Or if you're full time, offer to take a cut in hours to work from home, if you're already thinking of going part time.

I would make a proposal and make it a win-win for both of you, boss included. Think it through and come up with a good proposal.

    You might be pleasantly surprised!

  • There are quite a few PT professional positions listed on my local Craig's List board. Smaller companies tend to post ads there.

  • Thanks for all the advice.  I asked back in Jan if I could cut my hours to 4 days and proposed how I could do it, while continuing to WFH 1 day a week.  My current position isn't really conducive to working from home FT.  My boss didn't really respond and when I had my review in March we really discussed it and I though it was getting approved. He didn't tell me he was taking another position in the company and that it was not his decision to make.  My new boss is still flexible and I was told by my old boss that he knows I'd like to reduce my hours...I am trying to get up the nerve to ask him...although he is flexible, I don't think he'd be receptive to this...he works 24-7.
