Does my dog know something I don't?

She would NOT leave my side this a.m., which is unlike her.  Even when I got in the shower, she came in and sat right next to the tub.  And she normally HATES the bathroom (b/c that's where baths happen!) and won't enter it freely.  I even left the door wide open so as to not get dizzy from the steam, and she stayed with me the whole time.

At the moment, I've got nothing going on that would lead me to believe things are progressing.  Perhaps this is why I'm over-analyzing my pup's behavior . . . But she was freaking me out!  And I wasn't doing anything different that she would have been responding to . . .

Any thoughts?  Can a dog just *know*?

  • I'm not a dog behavioral expert (like Cesar Milan) but I do think that dogs sometimes have a extra sense that we don't and I bet many other dog owners would agree!!!! Maybe your baby will make it's debut sooner than you think....

I have a Maltese and a German Shepard and both have acted funny off and on since I started showing.  My Maltese tries to snuggle with me but wants his head to be right by my belly all the time- which he didn't do before.  And my Shepard has licked my belly several times in the last few weeks.....gross but kinda cute!  Gotta love dogs!

  • I had a dog when I lived in California and he would go hide a couple days before we would have an earthquake. I think they can def. sense when something is "off" or about to happen. :)
  • My Australian Shepherd is a certified therapy dog, and we volunteer in nursing homes and alzheimers units - she can tell when someone is about to have a stroke or episode of some sort - her attitude changes completely, and I've gotten to the point where when she does certain things, I go get the staff so they can be prepared. She's pretty acurate.. I don't think it's any different for people going into labor, so I think it's definitly possible that your dog can sense something! People now days have dogs that are trained to specifically sense seizures and what not, so I definitly think some have a "sixth sense."

  • All very interesting!  Well, per my cervical check this afternoon, I'm only a fingertip dilated, so it doesn't seem like anything's happening so very soon . . .

  • I had to almost laugh when I saw this thread!  I literally just got done telling a coworker that my dog has been acting really weird the last few days.  He's normally an attention-hog, but he's been like velcro the last few days!  Even coming and laying by me during the day when he normally prefers his big comfortable bed.  He's also been checking out the baby's swing more and more (he ignored it completely when we set it up).  He pretty much never leaves my side!  My coworker made the comment "well maybe he knows something you don't!".  I have a big english mastiff and we always joke about how "dumb" he is, but maybe he's smarter than we give him credit for!

  • I'm not saying it not may be possible, however from what I have been witnessing on these boards is that there are a lot of people taking every day occurrences and making them into some sort of sign that baby is on the way. Well yeah, you're baby is on his/her way, due to the gestational period closing in. Like I said, I haven't don't any research on the matter and I'm no professional, however I wouldn't read into too much. You'll drive yourself cRaZy.

  • Yes, I do believe your dog can sense something. Your dog knows that your time is getting close and if you are even a little nervous or feeling off, the dog will know. That being said, it doesn't mean you'll have your baby quite yet. You could be 3 weeks away from delivery still, but the dog will still start picking up on your feelings of anxious or nervousness.

  • My dog is the same way (doesn't like the bathroom because of his baths there), but he has been coming to the bathroom with me and sitting there while I shower (and even when I just go to pee) for the past 3 weeks!  If I get up from a chair, he jumps up and follows me.  Nothing has happened; only 36 weeks.  I think they're generally just more aware....?
  • I could have written this myself! My German Shepherd usually wants nothing to do with me during the day, she goes and lays on her bed and I dont usually see her until DH comes home. Lately she is 100% my dog. Next to me all the time, even when dh is here.
