Did/will you do anything to try to test GBS negative?

As a VBAC, if I'm GBS positive I have to go into the hospital and get an IV sooner in labor so I really don't want to test positive.  Just wondering if anyone has done anything to try to ensure a negative result?  I eat yogurt every day so hoping that will help but wondering if additional things will help/work.

  • Taking a good refrigerated probiotic daily is more effective than yogurt. At 34 weeks my MW wants me to start using the probiotic both orally and vaginally. HTH!

    Any brand recommendations? :)

  • I too plan to use yogurt (greek is better with lower sugar) and use high quality probiotics.  I was surprised about vaginal use - I'll have to ask my midwife.

    I

I bought Primadophilus Optima by Nature's Way from our local health food store. It has 35 billion CFU, essentially higher CFU = more good stuff. It costs maybe $45 for 60 so kinda an investment but worth it to me. I tested positive with GBS in my urine at the start of this pregnancy so I really want to make sure I'm negative now.

  • I took probiotics. They worked, but then my GBS came back.

  • I took garlic gel caps (orally I think but it's been several years) for about a week before the testing, and both times I was negative.  I also eat yogurt and will try to eat more as testing time approaches.  I read about inserting a garlic clove vaginally and may try that this time if I don't find capsules.
  • The doulas teaching our NB class highly recommended cuttign as much sugar out of your diet as possible as the higher one's sugar intake is, the more likely they are to test positive for GBS because the bacteria thrives on sugar.
