How to clean used toys

So I got some toys at a tag sale this weekend, a few of them have little wrattles or sound boxes inside so I cant put them in the washing machine.  Any suggestions how to get them clean?

  • Any plastic toys I put in the dishwasher.

  • Yep, day cares use bleach solutions. 1:10 bleach to water ratio, spray it, and then let air dry (rather than wiping/etc)

Is that safe for the baby? I was just thinking it will prbably end up in his mouth.

  • I clean w vinegar and water. If they're plastic you can throw in the dishwasher too

Its fine :)  And you rinse with water afterwards anyways

  • For cloth toys, I use just soap and warm water. For plastic toys, I wash in a sink with dishsoap and use a disinfectant wipe on them afterwards. Then I rinse it off in warm water before giving it to lo.

A 1:10 household bleach to water solution will sterilize within 3 minutes.  Do a thorough bleach dip or spray to fully wet the surface, then set it aside to dry.  When bleach (NaOCl) dries, there is nothing harmful left on the toys - all of the chlorine evaporates, the only thing left might be a salt residue.  Dip them in water afterwards if you want, but I don't.

I don't recommend a bleach dip then immediate rinsing.  You really need to let the bleach solution sit on the toy for a few minutes.  For any toys with metal components, don't use bleach!  Use a different cleaner.

  • go with the bleach solution that the others suggested for plastic toys;  after they air dry they are safe for baby;  if you are uncomfortable with the idea of bleach residue,  just rinse them in clean water;  cloth toys without obvious stains but that are not machine washable can be clean with a light misting of a vinegar solution and then dried outdoors on a sunny day--if you are truly uncomfortable with bleach you can always use a steamer to sanitize plastic

I look into Vinegar before using bleach. You'd be SURPRISED at it's cleaning power! I use it for all my pet messes because it neutralizes ammonia so you don't get the repeat marking by your pets. Once I researched that use, so many other uses for it popped up. you can clean your entire house with it.
