Have you left your nursing baby overnight?

Does anyone have experience leaving a nursing baby for a night or two at one year old? I would be able to leave pumped milk, but I'm paranoid it's going to make LOs wean and not want to nurse when i get back. Did this happen to anyone? Or do they just get right back to nursing?Thx!

  • I haven't left my babies overnight, but I have had surgery and my son got bottles for 24 hours or so and that went fine. I'd worry more about your supply, not the babies.

  • Yes- I travel for work and have been gone 3-4 nights. Make sure you pump LOTS of milk- tell people how to care for/feed your baby (i.e. if she wakes up give her a warm bottle, hold her close, cuddle, no CIO etc). Don't worry about weaning because my little lady is thrilled to see me and then nurses immediately...and I started having to travel when she was 4 months old.

The biggest thing is how the caregiver responds to your baby- I make sure people know to care for my girl like I would- in a loving and attentive manner...especially at night.

There will be no impact on your nursing relationship.

  • Thanks! It's so good to hear that they go right back to nursing!!I didn't mention it but it will be dh (plus maybe a helper) taking care of them while I am gone so I have no worries about how they will be treated :) and I will pump a lot!

I've done it, and if anything, it made her nurse more when I got back. Just make sure you pump while you're gone to keep your supply up.

This. I tried to pump as much as she was nursing when I had to be gone for 3 days, but it was hard. I ended up pumping for a really long time at night, in the hotel, and it worked out fine.

LO nursed for a long time when I got home - I was gone when she was 15 months. And then again when she was about 18 months. This last time - just last week - I was afraid she would wean, but she has been nursing non-stop since I got home.

I did with both kids with no issues.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • We went away for a weekend when she was 13 months and still nursing 3x a day. She went right back to nursing and didn't wean until I got pregnant a few months later.

  • Like a pp, I didn't leave DD overnight when she was still nursing, but I did have a medical procedure that prevented me from nursing her for 48 hours. I pumped the whole time to relieve pressure and to keep up my supply, but DD was completely fine and happy to nurse again as soon as I was able.
