TTC After a Loss

If all your repeat loss bw came in normal...

What were the next steps your RE/OB took? I go for my results on Friday and am trying to arm myself with lots of questions to ask. My fear is that it will come back all normal and I won't really leave feeling hopeful. Anything you strongly recommend I should ask about/push for from your experiences?

Thank you!

Mine came back normal except for one very very slightly increased immunoglobin level (not even the one he was worried about). We had pathology done on both my losses, though, and know they were not related (one was cell overgrowth, like a molar pregnancy but thankfully not, and one was Trisomy 21), so my official diagnosis was "really bad luck." My OB placed me on low-dose aspirin as a precaution, and offered to refer me to a RE. I did go for a consult where I got an excellent prognosis (he told me to use OPKs and said he'd be shocked if I weren't pregnant in 6-8 months), and I also had a SHG to make sure I didn't have scar tissue from my two D&Cs. And that was about it.

I can't really think of any specific advice aside from asking what they suggest you do at this point. I hope you get some answers on Friday ((hugs))

  • My RPL b/w came back normal except for slightly elevated homocysteine (which my OB prescribed 4mg folic acid and B-complex). At that point I started seeing an RE to see what my next step should be. My RE didn't think it was critical for me to do additional tests with "only" two losses (one of which was "clinical" and one was "chemical") but for peace of mind, offered an HSG (iodine dye/xray procedure to check your uterus for anatomical issues) and karyotyping on both me and DH (checks for chromosomal abnormalities through bloodwork). I'd also suggest getting your thyroid checked (bloodwork) if that hasn't already been done.

I know my thyroid was checked in my RPL panel. I was thinking about asking about and HSG since I should be getting AF the day of my appt if I o'd when I think I did so that would really be perfect timing.

WOW - our histories are frighteningly similar (one child 12/09, m/c, cp, cp, m/c).  After our 4th loss in November we were tested for just about everything under the sun.  And everything came back 100% normal - nothing even remotely abnormal.  So our losses were chalked up to bad luck and we were told to try again.  After 4 cycles of trying, we just got another bfp and if this one doesn't stick, I will be going to a reproductive immunology specialist.  Reproductive immunology is a somewhat newer field than reproductive endocrinology and there aren't nearly as many doctors who specialize in RI.  So if your results come back normal, I would inquire with your RE as to what he/she feels about testing for reproductive immunological issues and keep RI in the back of your mind as another option to explore.

    Good luck to you.  :hugs:

I haven't been yet.  Most RI testing is not covered by my insurance and the closest RI specialist to me is in NYC (I'm in the mid-Atlantic).  So DH and I agreed that we would give the dice one more roll - which was our RE's recommendation - and if we have our 5th loss then I will travel to New York for an RI consult.

    All ALers welcome!
  • Mine was mostly normal. I have MTHFR but normal homocysteine so my RE just put me on extra Folic Acid, B6, and B12. I sometimes have low progesterone (the first few times we checked it it came back great but I had a few months in a row where it was pretty low) so we're doing progesterone supps after O as a precaution. And I was found to be mildly hypothyroid so I'm on a low dose of levothyroxine.

My RE is mostly convinced I've just had awful luck and thinks if anything the progesterone was the issue. I'm hoping he's right!

    Good luck!

    wondering same question.

As for me I had one genetic recessive gene the MTHFR thingy- but didn't affect my homocysteine levels, so they said I didn't have to do anything. I ended up taking extra folic, and baby aspirin and progesterone and had a successful pregnancy. Since then 3 miscarriages.

    Thank you!

My testing was normal too except for a very slight thyroid issue (I keep forgetting if it's hypo or hyper) so I'm taking a super low-dose supplement.

I asked my doc where we go from here and she gave me the usual options for when I'm pg again, like baby aspirin, progesterone supps, etc.  She mentioned that none of those are proven to always work, but that they are things we could try.

    Good luck!

  • I'm going to guess that you've already had imaging as part of your RPL testing, but if not, that's definitely something to ask for.  (Probably either an sonohistogram or an MRI.)  Sometimes uterine abnormalities can make it hard for implantation to occur in the right location.

Other than that, I don't have anything to suggest...  Sorry.  I wish there was a straightforward answer that would allow the doctors to "fix" all of us so we never have to go through this again. Sigh.
