Best carrier for travel with a two month old?

We have a Moby and an ergo sport. We used the Moby with DD for maybe four months, so by the time we got the ergo, we didn't need the infant insert.

We are planning a three week international trip for when DC2 is 2.5-3 months old or so. I do not want to use the Moby for this trip. We will likely be buying the infant insert for the ergo anyway, but I'm wondering what your go-to carrier is for that age, especially for travel in airports/train stations, in public, etc. Also, We may still need the ergo for DD since she will only be 2.

TIA!

Re: Best carrier for travel with a two month old?

  • I don't think you'll need the infant insert for the 2.5-3 month old. My guy is barely a month and he is already outgrowing it and gets overheated in it so we just put him in the carrier, froggy his legs and make sure his neck is supported and go. I feel like the ergo is still a bit too warm for him though, I am wondering if the sport is better for the summer :/

Curious what people say about traveling though - as we will be flying w/ our LO in Sept and I would love to know what works best for the airport and on the plane!

Thanks for the insight! DD was small when she was born (15%) but quickly grew to 90%! So maybe DC2 will grow similarly and not need the infant insert much either.

  • We love our ring sling for travel. It's compact and easy to put on and off while holding the baby (as opposed to the Ergo which I normally have to put the baby down to do the waist clip).

However, we already own it and love it (we have Moby and Ergo as well) so for us it's a matter of choosing between carriers we already have and love. I don't know that I would buy one for just that purpose. It also has a bit of a learning curve to get it comfortable so you'd want to make sure you had it down before relying on it for that length of time.

I traveled with DD when she was 10 weeks old & I used the Ergo, no insert. I just froggied her legs. I was traveling solo with her & flying- the Ergo was awesome.
  • We travelled for the first time when DD was about 2.5 months and bought a RS specifically for the trip. Best baby purchase yet! It's so easy to get her in and out of it (especially when she was little) and she napped well in it. It was also easy to just scrunch it up and stick in the diaper bag or somewhere else if she wasn't in it. When she was little I would keep her in the RS on take off and nurse her in it, then she'd usually just fall asleep for the rest of the flight.

I have been told by TSA people that the rules have changed and you don't need to take baby out of the carrier anymore (and was told this while wearing the RS), although I haven't tried it yet.

I was going to recommend the moby (or a woven). If not, then the ergo or a RS.

The thing is... a moby/woven wrap has no metal, so you can wear it through the security line without taking baby out. For that reason alone, I prefer wraps when I travel.

The Ergo doesn't have any metal either so you're allowed to keep it on. With my RS I didn't have to take it off and it didn't set off the detectors, but it would depend on the security personnel.

To the other PP, yes they have changed the rules and you don't have to take baby out, but you do have to have your hands swabbed, which can take an extra 5 min or so depending on staffing.

  • Thank you all! I figure we will be taking at least two carriers because of both kiddos, so maybe I can get a shorter woven wrap and a RS to try out before the trip. Or a second ergo. Decisions, decisions...
