Two Under 2

High chair & stroller question

Because you get a registry completion 20% off certificate I am trying to put everything I will need on there including a second high chair.

When DD2 starts solids, DD1 will be about a year and a half. Should I get another high chair or would a booster be best??

Right now I have a Graco Duo Diner which I can turn into a booster that attaches to a chair, but it was $120. If I am just going to need a booster for DD1 I would rather buy just that and not spend the extra money.

So booster style or high chair? If booster, do you have any recs?

Also, a double stroller that can carry a car seat and 1 year old? I have a Graco Snug Ride so I would like something compatible that it could snap on to.

Thanks!

Re: High chair & stroller question

  • DD1 switched to a booster at the table around 18 months, just before DD2 was born, so we skipped the second high chair. We have two booster seats - one is a Safety First that folds up for travel. It has a higher back and a removable tray, so it's nice for travel, and I felt comfortable using it for DD1 starting around 6 months because it is kind of chair-like.

The one we're using now is very basic and I love it. DD1 can climb in and out herself, which is awesome. Here's the link:

As for a double stroller, we have a Graco DuoGlider that holds our SnugRide 32. It's not a popular stroller on this board, but I love it. Bulky because it's a double, but it maneuvers well and is comfortable for both girls.

  • My son has been in a booster since about 18 months as well. We have a "the first years" brand that we got at a consignment sale. It folds and has a tray but we've been using it without the tray for a while now. It's just attached to one of our dinging chairs and he can climb in and out by himself but can't scoot it in and out from the table so that's a perfect compromise for us.

Side note: Our midwife suggested teaching our son to get in and out of his chair by himself when I was pregnant. It helps at the end of the pregnancy when you're exhausted and huge and makes recovery easier because it's one more time when you're not lifting.

We didn't get a stroller so I can't help you there.

My younger son is out of a booster seat at 20 months so I think your older one could easily switch to a booster.

We also have a DuoGlider.  I bought it used and it is probably pushing ten years old.  It is pretty heavy, but has served its purpose pretty well.  With almost 60 pounds of kid, it can get kind of hard to push, but it has been worth every penny of the $35 I paid for it.

My boys have always been in the fisher price booster with the tray at first and then after 12mths at the table. Both of them switched to sitting at the table in a regular chair around 17-18months old.

We have a city select and I love it. It's a single or double so its really great now that ds1 wants to walk a lot more.

  • Mine are 18 months apart. I am getting a booster for DS.  He recently started fighting the high chair, because he wants to sit directly at the table with us.  DD will then use his high chair when she starts solids.

I have the BJCS stroller and I love it.  It will take a Graco car seat with an attachment. Later when DS wants to walk, I can turn it back into a single or go back to using my Uppa.

  • Our boys are 18 months apart, my middle boy used the fisher price foldable booster seat with a tray from about six months on since I couldn't find a high chair I loved until a few months ago.  As far as teaching your 18 month old to get in and out on their own that depends on the kid my son can do it but we don't encourage it since he's a climber naturally and I don't need him on the table. I had no problem lifting him the whole pregnancy.

  • I think we started putting DS1 in a booster around 16-17 months.  I know it was definitely before 18 months.  He hated being in the high chair at that point.  Now (22 months), he doesn't even want to sit in the booster anymore, even though he is really too short not to.  As for a stroller, I found having a double to be really useful, as DS1 is not the best hand-holder and tried to run away.  I have the Graco Duo Glider.  It is really light weight (I think, not any heavier than my single), folds easily, and fits in the trunk of my small sedan if I remove the front canopy and tray (kind of annoying, but not a huge deal).
