Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Temper tantrums already!?

I have a wonderful 10 month old baby boy. Lately he has been getting mad when I tell him no or if he doesn't get feed right away. He screams and waves his hand around!!! Is this a temper tantrum already? I thought maybe he is just getting frustrated because he cant vocalize what he needs. He has always been such a character and a goof ball so when he started this I was taken back. Do I discipline him? Do I ignore it? Advice needed!!

DD acts similarly, sometimes--it's just a learning process. They're starting to understand that they can't always have what they want when they want it. When DD screams like that, I tell her no, firmly, and then ignore her if she continues (unless we're out in public of course). Good luck!

  • Yup, same as PP, DD will throw a nice little fit if she doesn't get her way from time to time.  I tell her no and sit her down on the floor (if we sitting on the couch or something) and that usually gets the point across that it's not ok.

DS has been doing this for a few months, and seems to be getting worse as he gets older.  I don't give in and give him his way, I usually just ignore it and try to distract him.

  • DD has also been doing this for a few months.  Agree with the others.  She is just learning that she can't have everything she wants or do everythings she wants.  I think it's frustrating for them and they can't communicate well enough yet.

Yup, my LO just learned the dramatic fake cry a few weeks ago. Its kinda cute too:). When I tell him "no" he will grab it anyway and kinda throws it at me, then does the dramatic" mouth wide open, eyes closed" cry

  • Our DD started doing this a couple weeks ago.  Usually happens when she's going for something she shouldn't have and I pick her up, or if I take something aware from her.....she just yells and kicks her legs around.  But I just redirect her to something else and she stops.

DS is in the throws of this lately as well. It is driving us batty, glad we are not alone. He pitches a fit anytime we try to confine his freedom, so to speak, by putting him the the jumper, saucer or play pen. Sometimes it happens other places as well, like the swings at the park yesterday, fun. We try to ignore him if he is fussing, and he does the fake cry too, however, sometimes it has been escalating into a full out bawl fest, so we try to calm him then. He's doing it now as I type lol...

  • My DS does this too. He will freak out if I don't give him food fast enough or can't get to a toy he is trying to pay with. I think a lot of my DS's sets from frustration because he isn't great at crawling yet but he really wants to go.

This is us! Only when we put her in the car seat. She goes nuts! She goes completly straight and stiff and screams like crazy!

  • Yep.  He has also recently started throwing himself back and screaming.  Super fun.  I tell him "you're fine" and then redirect him with a toy or something else.
