I have always thought that choosing a boy name was more difficult than a girl name. We agreed on our boy's name fairly painlessly- Colin Edward. However, we could use some fresh ideas on girl names. Here are our favorites so far:
Caroline- my favorite, my husband claims to like it, but says is concerned about lack of nickname options for some reason. Neither of us care for Carrie/Carol as a nickname. I don't think it needs a nickname at all.
Claire & Natalie- my husband likes these equally. I like them, but love Caroline much more, so choosing either of these feels like settling. You may notice, that these names don't have obvious, built-in nicknames either, and neither does our boy name. I agree, thus my frustration for his "reasoning" against Caroline.
Any thoughts on these names or ideas for names of a similar style? I feel like to be fair to both of us we may need to find an entirely different name, but it seems like there is no (decent) name we haven't already talked about! I'm hoping a different perspective will be helpful.
Thanks!
Re: Girl name advice
I like all 3 names. I don't think that Caroline will automatically be shortened. I know 2 Carolines, and they both go by their full name, so if it is your absolute favorite and DH can get on baord, I would use it.
Otherwise, Natalie Claire is a pretty fn/mn comb.
I used to work with someone whose full name was Caroline. I called her Carrie because everyone else did. I found out months later she hates to be called Carrie. oops. Have you considered Carolyn? May not be much different. Maybe others will have comment on Carolyn and if it's likely to be nick named or shortened somehow.
Claire was our top girl name, so I have to vote for it. I really like both Claire and Caroline and don't think Caroline needs a nn.
Natalie is a sweet name, but doesn't feel as strong for me. It's a little more cutesy (I guess the "ie" ending does it).
I love Caroline, so I vote for that one. I don't think it needs a nickname, but you can't always predict that.
Some other ideas that might be up your alley:
Clara, Cora, Jane, Julia, Helen, Anna, Eleanor, Lucy
Caroline and Natalie were in my top 3 but I got vetoed
I have had a lot of students named Caroline and almost all of them went by their full names. It's a beautiful and classy option that carries well into adulthood. One girl did go by Carly and I thought that was adorable!
