LO eye surgery

Well its official, we have to have Alexis's eye probed for her blocked tear duct, which means she has to be under anesthesia. I'm trying not to freak out about it, since apparently I'm having panic attacks now. I know they do it all the time, I know it will be quick and easy, but I wish she didn't have to have it :(

The anesthetic part is tough to swallow but, you're doing the right thing.  When is the surgery?

  • My little guy had that done in April. He was 22 months old.  I was a wreck but he was in and out SO quickly... The worst part was him coming out of the anesthesia.  He was freaking out.  THey finally just took the IV out and told us to take him home.  Once we were in the car, he was fine. After a nap, you never would have even known the kid had anything done. He was in no pain and completely back to normal.

We had it done at a Childrens Hospital, where they were completely equipped to take care of kids. That made it so much better. I would highly recommend that. Also, see if you can be first on the drs schedule. It sucks that they can't have any food or drink many hours prior.  It would have been torture if he had to wait any longer!

Good Luck!! She will be ok and her eyes will never be watery or gunky again!

  • Caden has had 6 eye surgeries to repair her tear duct and the first one was far and away the easiest.  They didn't even put an IV in, so ask about that possibility.  Also, know that you can hold her as she goes to sleep, and you can sing or do whatever.  In our hospital they do bubbles and that works.

Honestly, I try to keep it in perspective.  I know so many  moms whose kids are going in for hours long surgeries.  This is 5 minutes, and it's as easy as it gets.

  • My 4 year old had this done at 9 months, without anesthesia. Dont want to scare you but it was horrible ( holding her down screaming and having them do both eyes). Id imagine having her under anesthesia would have seemed much less like torture. The entire process took about 3 minutes, and as soon as they were done and i held her she was fine, by the time we got to the car it was like it never happend. But looking back, i worry that she will have flashbacks of that-ugh. Good luck.
