Babies: 9 - 12 Months

back to 3 naps at 9 months

So we have been nap training for about 2 or 3 weeks now and her naps are all over the place. At first I just went with the flow of when she woke up I would go get her, now I realize that she needs to stay in her crib at least an hour. This morning for example: she fussed for 30 min then slept for 10 and then fussed the other 20 til I went get her. I just don't know what to do to help her catch on. Because these naps are so short she is wanting to take an extra nap. Yesterday I kept her up between morning and afternoon nap as long as possible, but she was a cranky mess.

Any advice?

  • She sleeps anywhere from 10.5 to 11.5 hours at night.

  • My DD is almost 11 months and she still naps 3 times a day. Whenever we keep her up and skip the 3rd nap she's a hot mess. We started the Ferber plan about a month ago. I tried postponing her 2nd nap gradually, but it didn't work. I think he mentions that if the first nap of the day is pretty soon after wake-up time then it's technically a continuation of her night sleep. DD gets up at 6-6:30 and naps around 8. I can't get her to extend her night sleep, but that's the goal. If I can get her to sleep till 7-8am, then her nap schedule might be better. Anyhow, I don't have any good advice because I haven't found a solution yet either. Good luck!

  • I'm just curious, if before she was doing well with two naps and whatever you were doing, why are you training her? I would just stick with what works. I still nurse/sooth my boys for their naps and they lengthened them no problem. I figure it's different than night time sleep, they won't take naps forever so they don't need to do it on their own.

She was sleeping in her swing until about 5 months old then I tried to transition her to her crib. That didn't work very well so I rocked her then put her in her crib. Did that for a month and it just wasn't working out so eventually I just let her fall asleep on me and I would lay down with her. I'm pregnant so it gave me some rest too. It's a really bad habit that I wish I had never gotten her use to. When we first started nap training she was fussing herself to sleep but sleeping for longer periods. They are just getting shorter and shorter. I'm not quite sure what the deal is.

I have no problem rocking her to sleep or even laying down with her, but with another DD on the way it won't be able to be like that so that is why I can't stick with what works.

  • Obviously you have to do what works for you, but i will say that i have two LO and i manage to juggle nap times such that i can put them both to sleep. If they took a long time to go down it would be harder but one waits in the playpen or gets worn in a carrier while I deal with the other. So if it's something you want to keep doing, i wouldn't worry about what will happen when your other lo gets here, you will manage to make it work with the two.
