To pinch or not to pinch - an injection question

Good morning ladies!  Stims began last night, and I decided I needed a brief refresher on proper injection technique.  I flipped through my IVF information packet from my clinic, and they said to pinch the skin and then inject for sub q shots.  I did not do that last cycle.  i just jabbed it right in.  So then I watched a video online, and they just jabbed it right in without pinching.

What do you do when you do sub q injections?  And does it really matter whether you pinch or not?

Re: To pinch or not to pinch - an injection question

  • This is my third time doing sub-q injections, and honestly, I've only pinched a handful of times.  Not pinching hasn't impacted the effectiveness of the injections.

    Good luck!

  • As long as it gets in there you're good to go. I pinch it sometimes just for something to concentrate on, but if there's a difference I think it's negligible.

    Good Luck!

  • I think I'm going to not pinch from here on out.  Pinching hurts more, and I feel like it gives everything more opportunity to ooze out.  Thanks ladies!

  • I always pinched but it does not change the effectiveness of the medication.  The pinching is to help the needle go in easier.  I found a little fat made the injections smoother and things hurt less.  Best of luck.
  • I  have never pinched. I figure it is only a split second of being uncomfortable and I could be a big girl.

When DH did the IM shots, I iced my butt for about 15 minutes.  It made it more comfortable for me and less nerve-wracking for him because he was certain that he was going to hurt me with the needle.

  • I just wanted to add that IM shots are supposed to be the opposite.  You are supposed to spread the skin with your thumb and pointer.
  • I don't pinch, I just grab the nice fat roll I have and stick the needle in, lol. :)

I am loving that you are stimming already!!!!!
