Anyone treat a wart while pregnant?

Sooo...the one day I forgot my flip flops, I picked up a plantar wart on my foot from DS's swim class. It was TINY when I discovered it, but wanted to treat it right away, as they are very contagious. I asked my OB about OTC treatment with salicylic acid (i.e Compound W, etc.) and she said she 'thought' it was okay/safe. I also asked the pharmacist, who said it was fine because it doesn't enter the bloodstream, and there were no warnings on the box...

So I treated it for about two weeks, and now I came across info that says NOT to use salicylic acid while pregnant! I am so frustrated with the conflicting info...I just hope I did not expose the baby to anything dangerous.

Has anyone else treated a wart while pregnant?

  • I haven't personally but I used to work at a foot doctor's and we had pregnant ladies come in all the time to have warts treated. The medicine is local just on your foot and won't hurt the baby at all.

  • From what I've read, the danger of salicylic acid is if you are taking it orally, like when you treat severe acne.  Some say to avoid it all together, but really it's the oral one that poses the danger. If you're doctor said it was ok, then I think you're fine.

  • Earlier in my pregnancy a big gross wart appeared on my finger. I'd heard from a pharmacist that OTC treatments weren't on the safe list for pregnant women, so I just went to a doc and he burned it off with the super-cold stuff. (can't remember what it's called; my brain isn't working this morning) It hurt, so if your doc says an OTC med is safe, go that route!

  • I just found one on my foot too!  I asked the doctor if I could use an otc remover with salycic acid and she said no.  She did say it was ok to freeze it off but for now I'm just keep it covered with a bandaid.

You should be fine using something with salicylic acid--it's in most face washes--so you are probably exposing your skins to it anyway.

  • I have one too! First one I've ever had and I too got it from DS's swim lessons. I was so annoyed. I honestly didn't know that's what it was for the longest time until DH (who is a doctor) told me that's what it was. It hurt a lot.

Anyway he said to put duct tape on it. If you read online a few studies have found the duct tape actually works better than OTC treatments. So that's what I'm doing until after I have the baby. If it's still there I think I'll go get it freezed off. My OB told me not to treat it with anything but the duct tape for now, too.

Also, just so you know the duct tape made the pain go away when walking which is nice!

  • Topical salicylic acid does not cause high circulating levels of the drug, meaning you should be perfectly fine!

  • my doc also said no to the acid, but said freezing it off was fine.  I've been trying, but it's so stinking stubborn!!  And I SO wanted a pedi before this baby comes!!
