Babies: 9 - 12 Months

What is the earliest you would introduce WCM?

I am by no means trying to rush DD, but knowing that I will have another LO right before DD turns 1 is making me kind of nervous about the switch and her getting bottle envy.

Right now we are at 4 - 6 oz bottles a day and the 2 mid day bottles she doesn't always finish (takes about 4 or 5 oz). I am thinking I can cut her back to those at 5 oz.

I had someone suggest to me to start making her bottles with half water and half WCM and then offering WCM in a sippy at meals. I've never heard of the half and half before. She does great with a sippy (water). Drinks about 1 1/2 per day.

So what is the earliest you would start and how exactly would you do it??

Thanks so much!!

Re: What is the earliest you would introduce WCM?

  • I wouldn't do it before 11 months, even if cleared by my pedi, but that is just me.  I also wouldn't cut it with water, because that just depletes the nutritive value even more.   If you are worried about bottle envy, I would either transition to formula/BM in sippy cups now, or better yet...just go for a completely different type of bottle with LO #2.  I don't think 3 months is enough time for your DD to not get upset when the bottles are brought out again anyway.

  • I am in the same boat as you.  My DD is 10 months and DS is supposed to arrive a few weeks after her first birthday.  I've been having complications so I know he'll be coming sooner, so for me I was hoping to get her off the bottle before he arrived.  That turned out to be the easy part.  I just started using the sippy cups more often and she really loves the sippys with handles because she is an independent peanut and loves to do it herself.  I began putting formula in the sippy's and she loved it just fine.

I wasn't planning to transition her to WCM until 11 months per dr's instruction but about two weeks ago she flat out started refusing formula.  She would spit it out at me and shove the sippy away when I tried to give it to her.  I talked to the dr and they said to do what we could to get some milk/formula in her.  So I tried 1/2 formula, 1/2 WCM and she's taking that just fine.  She's had no issues with it at all and will take it without throwing a fit.  I plan to continue using the rest of this container of formula because by the time I have finished it up, she'll be at 11 months.  It's a personal choice and I didn't want to rush her, but she has always left me know when she was ready for things and when she wasn't and she has done just fine.

    Good luck!

We just started offering WCM along with formula a couple of days ago, at almost a year.  To be honest, it's been a really smooth transition and I wouldn't rush it.  We do warm the WCM up a bit so she's not drinking it straight from the fridge, but she doesn't seem to notice a difference between milk and formula when it's warm.

I really wouldn't be giving much water to a baby at 9 months.  I especially wouldn't start giving a baby WCM at that age, even if diluted.  Babies need the extra time for their digestive tracts to develop.  Milk can be hard on the system!  Also, the point of giving WCM is to provide nutrition with the necessary fats and vitamins for toddlers.  Diluting it would kind of defeat the purpose and potentially cause problems if she's getting full on diluted milk.

  • Here's an article about why you shouldn't give WCM before the age of 1.

We introduced it in a very small amount at 11 months exactly to the day.  My pedi okay'd trying at 11 months and I'm very ready to wean so I was hoping to jumpstart the process.  She won't drink more than an ounce so it's not working out as well as I planned.

  • I wouldn't rush anything. I kept DD#1 on formula past 1year, mainly because she was a picky eater and underweight as is. We also kept her on a bottle past 1 year. By 18 months, she was totally off the bottle and we transitioned to 100% WCM... we used Similac Go and Grow for a few months between also. I wouldn't take the bottle away just yet. Your LO's life is going to change in a few months and regression would be bad at the same time as having a newborn. Plus, she may feel more comforted by a bottle once the new baby comes along. Also, don't dilute milk unless directed to do so by pedi (like if your kid was severely overweight, or had some sort of lactose intolerance and needed to slowly introduce milk).

  • DD has been having 4 half formula/half whole milk for about the past two weeks.  We started her just over age 1.  We're trying to ease her into it, but honestly she has been completely fine.

We give sippies of just whole milk during meal time.  We'd like to get her used to just sippies during the day, and a bottle in the morning and evening.  And then evenutually drop those two bottles as well.

But like others have said, I am in no rush.

  • Pedi has always suggested a few oz WCM in a cup at mealtime from 9 months.  I would never feed WCM in a bottle nor would I dilute it with water.  I agree that it would deplete the nutritional value too much.

Edit:  The ministry of health in Ontario actually suggests starting at 9 months as well so that by the time they turn a year they are intaking approx 16 oz of WCM a day.

  • Someone on another board pointed out to me that whole milk is just like introducing any other food. I would say as long as she is hitting the minimum requirements for breastmilk (at this age about 16-20 oz) then you can start giving her WCM on top of that to ease the transition. GL!

  • Thank you everyone!

I will point out that when I said half milk half water I didn't mean in a sippy. I meant making her bottle with 3 oz water and 3 oz milk and the formula. I think maybe I was misunderstood. At DD's 9 month appt the pedi didn't mention anything about milk, just that bottles should be gone by 1 year. I am not stressing about the nighttime bottle too much because I realize lots of changes are going to be going on and that is probably her favorite part of the day. I was mainly asking for her mid morning and mid afternoon bottle. Again, thanks! Lots of great insight!!

I'm working to transition to a sippy cup, but I'm nowhere near transitioning to milk - I think the two are entirely separate issues (that just coincide at 1 year for most babies.). One is a physical skill and one is a nutritional/digestive development issue.

I've been giving formula in a sippy for all of the "bottles" during the day except the last before bed, because I'm not interested in disrupting our bedtime routine until he really "gets" the sippy (or maybe we'll just drop that bottle entirely when we switch to milk.). So far, DS takes a few ounces, and then refuses, and only if I'm holding the sippy. Then I put the remaining formula in a bottle and he eats a few more ounces. As he builds up to eating enough from the sippy, i'll stop offering the bottle, but for now I want him to get the nutrition and he's learning slowly.

My DS is not a big drinker though, he much prefers to eat solids, so I really want him to have the sippy cup down cold by the time he is 1. I don't know when we'll try milk as he has MSPI. So far, he's fine with cheese and baked goods, but yogurt in large-ish quantities doesn't sit well with him.

If you are just concerned about bottle envy, why not just put formula in a sippy?  No need to change what you're feeding, just how.

  • At 11 mos, 2 wks, we started with 1 oz of WCM and 7 oz of formula.  Every few days, I added another oz of milk and an oz less of formula until we worked our way up to all WCM.  We waited until we knew the baby was eating 3 full meals and snacks a day.

At 9 mos old, the majority of your baby's nutrition should still be coming from formula.  I would not start until into the 11th month and they are eating 3 full meals to begin the transition.

Thank you very much, everyone. I don't plan on substituting for formula I just was thinking about introducing it in a sippy maybe at snack time or meal time. After everyone's responses I think I am going to wait. She does eat 3 full meals a day and 2 snacks. She is on all table food and has been since 7 1/2 months. She pretty much eats what we eat and is a fantastic eater!

  • I started offering it at 11 months, but just as another food not as a replacement for breastmilk. I went back to work at 12 months and I'm not pumping, so I wanted to know he didn't have a problem with WCM before I packed him off to daycare with it.

If you're worried about the bottle, move to a sippy or straw cup but continue to offer formula in it until closer to 1. Or try breastfeeding again with the next baby - your older one won't know how, so then it's not an issue.

  • Our pedi said we could start introducing WCM during his 11 month.

As for your situation, I'd go ahead and start putting her formula or breast milk (whatever she's drinking now) in sippy cups rather than bottles. I don't think what's in them is going to matter if you're worried about bottle envy. DS was EBFed so when i decided to start weaning him, we switched to sippys (he was 9 month and I wasn't going to push a bottle at that age). He will sip at it enough to get in about 8 oz. during the day and then we nurse morning and night. SO you could always do sippys during the day and bottles for those other feedings. GL!

This is exactly what I plan on doing actually! I just need to find a sippy that will work because her sippy that has water in it flows too fast for formula (tried today) and I have another sippy that doesn't flow fast enough and she got frustrated. What brand of sippy did you use for this??
