5w2d u/s - 1 sac and 1 "something else"

Hi girls-

I had my first u/s (5w2d - IVF) today and when the doctor first put in the wand it was immediately apparent to she and I that there were 2 sacs.  She measured the first, labelled it "A" and went on to measure the second.  Turns out it behaved a little differently than a sac usually does and now she thinks it's likely just a pocket of fluid, but isn't ruling out a second sac.  I have another u/s in 11 days, which I know will be pretty definitive, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious as to what is going on in there.  Has any of you experienced anything similar?  A maybe sac that turned into something more - or not?  Thanks.

(And FTR, I am definitely not a twin wisher.  We would, of course, welcome twins with open arms, but we are not hoping for them.  We even considered doing a single embryo transfer.  So this is not a "I got an egg with a double yolk today - does that mean I have twinsies?!?!?!" post.)

  • My first u/s was around 5 weeks and my Dr wasnt sure about the 2nd sac but i think it was within a couple of days ( went to another office with better u/s equipment - same Dr ) it was definitely going to be twins ! Congrats and GL !

  • Similar situation (just to the extreme): Our 1st u/s was around 6.5 - 7 weeks.  We had 5 sacs (I know.. I told you it was extreme) and 4 babies w/ heartbeats.  We just assumed the 5th sac would be absorbed.  2 weeks later, we had 5 babies w/ heartbeats.  The 5th baby was only like a day behind in terms of growth.  So it is definitely possible, though I would try not to get your hopes up so you won't be disappointed incase nothing develps.  GL to you!

My first u/s was 5w0d. There was one sac that was clear to the RE and one something that may or may not have been a spot. Who knows, I couldn't see anything anyway.

My second u/s was at 7w0d and  there were very clearly 2 sacs with 2 heartbeats. Although one is measuring about a week behind the other. Right now, we assume it was a late implanter.

  • My first u/s was at 5w1d and we saw one gest sac and one yolk sac. At 6w3d there were two yolk sacs and heartbeats.

  • Congratulations!  How exciting!

Our first u/s was at 6w3d and the second sac/baby measured quite a bit smaller than the first one.  If we'd had an u/s a week earlier, it probably would have been questionable.  As it is, the smaller baby caught up and by 8 weeks they were both measuring the same size.  By 12 weeks they were both still the same size and measuring 5 days ahead.

Anything can happen...  either way, I hope you have a happy, healthy pregnancy!

This pregnancy we had 3 sacs and a something else at our 5, 8 and 12 week appts...Drs thought it was just a small bleed, or maybe it was a sac that didnt develop. Good Luck at your next appt!

  • I am having something similar happen currently (I posted the other day about this).  I've had a bunch of u/s so far due to bleeding and a few scares.  My second u/s at 5w4d they saw a gestational sac and yolk sac, but there was only 'fluid', or what my Ob thought was blood in the sac.  That was when he told me to go home and wait to miscarry.  When nothing happened by the end of that week I went back for a second opinion.  At that point, I think 5w6d, or 6w exactly?, they found a baby with a heartbeat, and a second 'dark area' next to the sac.  At 6w4d they saw the baby with the heartbeat and the second 'dark area' had turned into a separate gestational sac with it's own yolk sac.  The Ob again told me that he didn't think this second baby would become a take home baby, but seeing as he was wrong the first time and I have pretty much no trust in his word (he also massively mis-measured the first baby's sac, which is why he told me I was going to miscarry, because he measured the sac three weeks farther along than it was), as well as the fact that between the last two ultrasounds, there was still growth and development of a yolk sac, I am still holding out hope for this second (inside) baby.  We go back on Tuesday for a repeat u/s.  Good luck to you and I hope you have two sticky babies!

  • 5 weeks 6 days saw two gestational sacs and yolk sacs. 6 weeks 2 days 1 fetal pole and heartbeat. 6 weeks 5 days or so two fetal poles and heart beats I guess baby B needed some extra grow time. Good luck to you wishing you the best.

Yes, this happened to me. My first u/s around 5w4d showed a sac and something else. My RE said it could be a sac or a fluid collection. The next u/s showed 2 heart beats.
