Store it? Move it? Not sure!

Hey all...I'm a super-newbie, since Hubby hasn't left for OCS yet. He just got the date, Aug 19th, and so we are realizing we need to start the ball rolling. We live in SW Colorado, and he will be in RI for 13 weeks, and since I cant go, baby and I were going to go live with my parents in Phoenix so that we can save some money on rent and wait for him to get orders. I just don't know how to deal with the moving. Do I just pack it all up and put our house in a storage unit? If I do that, will I be ineligible for moving assistance later? I want to move out of our rental, so I can't see any other options, but I would love some insight. Thanks!

Re: Store it? Move it? Not sure!

  • will he get orders to where is is going to be stationed before he goes to ocs? if so you can have them move it for you before he leaves and then they will put it in storage for you.

A few years ago our lease was up while my husband was at basic, so we packed everything up and put it in storage. I stayed with family until we moved. We had a lot less stuff then, so it wasn't a huge hassle to pack it up and put it in storage. When we moved they picked everything up from the storage unit and moved it to where we were. So they should still move it to your first duty station for you, but if you're going to put it in storage that part would probably be your responsibility. We did have to have someone available to sign for the pickup at the storage unit when the time came for the movers to pick it up.

This is what we are doing as well. PODS offers a discount for military as well. Once we get our follow on orders we are having the POD moved to that location. We will be able to recoupe some of the cost since it is going to be considered a do it yourself move.

PODS is evil, or at least to us they were. They called us every day for a week saying they would be dropping our stuff off, and I stayed home that ENTIRE week waiting on it, and they tried to charge us for 1) that week of storage because they didn't drop our stuff off to us and 2) for missed deliveries when they didn't call to say they were there. Then, when we finally managed to get our stuff, the POD was in our driveway for two weeks while they tried to find the time to come get it from us. They said they would be there the next day to pick it up, so we hauled butt unloading it the night we got our stuff, and they didn't end up coming to get it until two weeks later. Very frustrating experience overall, however maybe that is just the one up here, because where we moved FROM we had no issues, they were on time both dropping it off, and picking it up, and very nice about it. They also gave another set of military members grief because they didn't have an exact address where they moved to, so that was an extra charge because their house that was 2 miles from the address they gave them was "in another PODS zone"

However, anyone that uses PODS, I wish you the best of luck and a better experience than my husband and our friends had!

We arent using PODS we rented a climate controlled storage space at an actual facility.

This is exactly what I did.
