TTC After a Loss

on clomid...do you use OPKs?

My RE didn't tell me to use them since he's monitoring me anyways and I'll go in on CD12 and see what's happening in there. But a friend of mine who sees my same doctor said that her first cycle of IUI w/ Clomid was cancelled because by the time she went in for her CD12 check she'd already ovulated. The next cycle she ended up doing IUI on CD9!

Without meds I normally ovulate between CD14-18 but I've ovulated a few times as early as CD10 or 11. So I'm a bit paranoid. I've been having O pains since last night and I took an OPK last night and in the morning...it wasn't positive but it was getting too close for comfort. I've read that if you use an OPK too soon after your last dose of Clomid it can give false positives though...so I'm hoping its just so dark because of that.

So I guess I'm looking for someone to tell me not to worry! LOL

And to ask if your doctor told you to use opks on clomid what day did they tell you to start?

And what's really weighing on my mind is that I still only feel this stupid O pain on my right side which might mean the cycle will be cancelled anyways if we don't have anything on the left....

Re: on clomid...do you use OPKs?

  • I do use OPK's on Clomid.  I am usually a late ovulator, typically around day 17.  I usually start using them on day 12.  One thing that i notice is that on Clomid, i always have a 2nd line and my positives are WAY dark.  Before Clomid, i only had a 2nd line around O time, and it was always iffy whether it was + or not.

Thanks! Good to know! I'm not too worried about that dark (but neg) line but with the O pains on top of it it really feels like I'm going to O today! So its kind of got me freaked out!

  • My RE had me use two of them between my monitoring appt (cd 12) and my trigger shot (cd14)  just to make sure I didn't have a surge earlier than anticipated. We would have bumped up the trigger and IUI timing if I'd had a natural surge too early.

  • I wasn't told to use them

I did because I was paranoid that I would O on my own since I usually O CD12/13 on my own and my first monitoring appointment after meds was also CD12.  It really eased my mind that I didn't surge before we triggered, but I didn't get anything close to a positive OPK.

Abdominal pain and translate!  I've had quite a few cycles where I thought all the activity was on the opposite side of where it was.  Don't give up till your u/s shows you whats really going on!

  • My doc didn't say don't use them but said you really don't have to because we're monitoring you for that reason.  He also def warned me about possibility of false positives also.  I chose to use them because it was my first cycle and I was afraid of missing O too, not knowing when I'd O with the Clomid.  My positive OPK's were accurate for me and coincided exactly with the prediction of my RE.  Now that I have a little more faith, this next cycle, which should be starting any day now, I am not going to temp or use OPKs because I felt high strung with all of it together.  I'm hoping if I'm a little more relaxed and trusting next cycle that it'll end in a BFP :)

  • I had a friend who got a false +OPK on clomid... so just something to keep in mind.

But yes- I do still use OPKs even while being monitored.  My last medicated cycle I got a +OPK a couple days before my next monitoring appointment so they brought me in sooner as a result.  The nurse gave me a hard time since my RE didn't put on my chart to use them, but he's ok with it.  I feel like it's my 'contribution' to the cycle Wink
