breathable bumper? or none at all?

I know that you're not supposed to use regular bumpers because they're are safety hazard for your LO, but what about breathable bumpers? Are you actually supposed to use them, or do you think it's best to just go without?

Re: breathable bumper? or none at all?

  • Honestly, I think it's just about personal preference. You're right, the American Academy of Pediatrics says no bumpers but that the breathable ones are fine. I think I'm going to decide based on whether I can find a breathable one that I like. If I do find one I like, I'm going to wrap it around my face and see what it's like to breathe through it...lol. If it's fine, I'll use it. The sad thing is that almost every crib set I see has a bumper, so the crib looks so incomplete without one! I can't decide.
  • The breathable bumper is fine.

  • we went bumper free for awhile with DD and she got stuck in the railing on her chest.  i found her in the morning exhausted from struggling to get out.  It was horrible.  That day I got a breathable bumper and I never had anymore issues.  We will be doing another one with this baby.

  • With my kids we didn't use bumpers for the first 4-6months.

But both of my kids are larger and when they got moving they would get legs stuck through the slats in the crib. So we installed the bumper that came with their crib sets.

DS still needs a bumper but because he's changing rooms to hand over the nursery to the new baby I bought him one of those new BreathableBaby bumpers to put on the crib in the big kid room.

My breathable bumpers are still in the package, mainly because I didn't like the way they looked.  They're totally safe to use though.

I kept the crib bumper free until around 15 months when I put the actual bumpers in.  DD moves around a lot and would constanly wack her head.  Ugh, that sound is so awful.  She only napped in the crib (and slept at night in our bed) and I always had the video monitor on so I never worried about it.

  • None. We've never needed one.

  • None, they are pretty easy to do without.

this is kind of us except that we have always had just a regular bumper from day 1. Flame away! By the time she was moving and rolling, she was strong enough to move if she had her face planted on the bumper and wasn't breathing. I totally understand using no bumper and breathable bumpers though. I just think people react way too quickly and start pointing fingers too often. I am NOT trying to start a debate. There's no point. Just felt like saying my opinion. :)

We use a breathable bumper with DS. I found him with his leg hanging out of the crib when he was about 4 months old and it scared the crap out of me. On went the breathable bumper.

  • Initially I'm skipping the bumper altogether, but if we start having "getting stuck in the slats" problems, I will go buy a breathable bumper.

  • I've used both and neither. I also agree that it is personal preference.

Just today he got his foot stuck at nap time (he's 16 months) and I almost had a hard time getting it out (thank goodness for video monitors) - but if I had any kind of bumper in there he'd use it to try to launch himself overboard anyway so at times it's a lose-lose situation.

  • I tried to go w/o a bumper with DS, but he ended up being a big mover and would keep getting his chunky legs stuck. I ended up getting a breathable one and it really helped. I think it just depends on the baby :)

  • I'm going breathable.  It was a tough choice because I know so many people who had bumpers, and we are all fine, but my set didn't come with one, and the one that matched it was like $70, so it worked out better to register for a coordinating breathable one anyways.  As PP's said, I would worry more about our little boy getting stuck without any bumper.  I have seen that happen before.

  • Wow, I would freak if DS got stuck in the crib, even if it was just his foot and he was fine. So yeah, probably breathable bumper. I'd rather avoid it than have a mommy meltdown.
