C-sections

scheduling a c-section

Hello. I have to have a repeat c-section because the hospitals near me absolutely will NOT do a VBAC so I'm sort of stuck with it.

I was wondering though for those of you that already have yours scheduled or have had scheduled ones before, how far ahead of your due date is your c-section scheduled for?

I remember that my mom had her c-section for my sister scheduled for 2 weeks before her due date.; But in a post below that I was looking at i saw a few that said anytime in the 39th week. Is there a time frame to expect or does it vary depending on Dr. & your area?

Thanks for any info. I keep forgetting to ask at my apts. but I know I still have plenty of time.

Re: scheduling a c-section

  • It may depend on your area and hospitals. I have had 3 repeat c-sections. In 2006 with my first repeat the docotor did the c-section 2 weeks before my due date. With the last 2 c-sections they told me that the hospitals have new rules and they will not let them scheduled repeat c-sections before 39 weeks unless there is a good reason. I would ask your doctor what their policy is.

  • I would push to go past 39 weeks. The newest research shows it is safest to deliver at (or beyond) 39 weeks and scheduled c-sections should not occur before 39 weeks like they used to unless it's medically necessary.

    I delivered at 39.5 weeks.

  • My OB won't schedule a c-section before 39 weeks..........my 1st was at 39w5d, my 2nd and 3rd at 39w3d........I would love for this one to be ON my due date, but I don't think she'll let me go that far........I might not make it.

  • my OB said i could schedule it anytime during my 39th week, definitely not before. my water ended up breaking at 37w2d so i didn't get my scheduled c-section, but it had been scheduled for 39w2d.

  • 1st scheduled c/s: 39w4d

    2nd scheduled c/s: 38w6d

    3rd scheduled c/s: 38w6d

My new OB (the one doing this 3rd c/s) said it had to be after 39w or as close to that as possible.  He was able to schedule it one day sooner because of my history of GD.

  • Mine couldn't be scheduled before 39 weeks.  It depends on your doctor and the area you live in.  I was glad it was that way though so my LO could cook as long as possible.

  • Our hospital can't legally allow a repeat c-section to be scheduled prior to 39 weeks, so mine is scheduled for when I am exactly 39 weeks.  I could have scheduled for any day after that but not before.

I am wondering now, if I go into labor before that, will they try for a vbac or still do a section?

My doctor told me the same thing. I am schedule 2 days before my due date.

  • Mine is scheduled for 39w 2 days but anytime after 39w is what my OB said was ok. I think March of Dimes has really been advocating against early inductions. Studies have shown increased lung issues, asthma and allergies the earlier they come. Most people I know that were induced prior to 39w either had complications that made it necessary or were several years ago.

Typically, they would do an emergency c-section in that case. Since I'm not allowed to VBAC at all, if I go into labor, it will be a c-section.......

  • My OB won't do a c-section before 39 weeks unless there is a medical reason for it to be earlier.  Of course, if I went into labor on my own before that, he would do a c-section earlier.  My water broke 4 days before 39 weeks with DD, and he did my c-section that day.

  • Thanks for all the relies. S o it sounds pretty unanimous that it will be scheduled for no earlier than 39wks. Hopefully I can remember to ask my Dr. at my next Apt. But at least now I know what to expect for my answer.

  • My doc will officially schedule my c/s at my 28w appointment, but it will be right around 39w, and since the doc only has 2 scheduled surgery days a week, I know it will be one of 2 dates already.

With DS, we didn't schedule the c/s until about a week before he was born - I was high-risk, but we were holding out hope we'd be able to do an induction & attempt a vaginal delivery.  I saw the doc on a Wednesday, and DS was born via scheduled c/s the following Tuesday.
