placement of car seat

Where is your carseat?  Behind driver, behind passenger or in the middle?  Currently we only have a carseat for my car (SUV) and we placed it behind the passenger so I could turn and see DD if I need to.  We just traded DH's hunk of junk for a 4 door sedan and we bought a conv carseat for it.  We are going to put it in the middle of the car, but not sure about the SUV.  I'm short and wondering if it would be hard getting her in and out if the carseat is in the middle.  TIA!

Re: placement of car seat

  • I have 2 LOs so the carseats are behind the driver and passenger seats. DD is behind the driver seat and DS is behind the passenger seat so that I can see him.

However, when I just had DD she was in the middle in both cars because I felt it was safer.

It's behind the driver's seat because my husband can't fit in the passenger seat with the carseat behind it.  Whereas I have short legs and we fit just fine.

  • I have an SUV and DH has a Pacifica (not sure what those are classified as outside of a hideous vehicle)...anyway, we have the carseat in the middle in both.  I'm average height (5'6) and I will admit that some days, it kinda is a pain.  Obviously at 6'2, DH isn't bothered by it at all.

She is in the middle. I have a Civic.....I just climb into the seat next to the car seat, strap her in and go.

When D was in the carrier, we had him in the middle in my car(no car seat for him in DH's car at that point).   When we finally got a convertible for DH's car, it had to behind the passenger.   Rearfacing seat doesn't fit behind driver in his car.   Then when we finally put a convertible in my car, it went behind the passenger.

Then once A came along....D moved behind the driver since a rearfacing seat can't go behind the driver's seat in DH's car.   We wanted the seats in the same spot in both cars so now D is in a harnessed booster seat behind the driver and A is in a rearfacing convertible behind passenger.

The Britax Advocate (big car seat) is in the middle back seat of my SUV. I am 5'5.

I get on the passenger seat to put him in and out. Not the easiest, but not hard, and I feel it is the safest place for the car seat having only one child.

  • we have ours behind the passenger seat, we have 4 hooks for the latch system in the back and i assumed incorrectly that the seat could be placed in the middle using one hook from each side - double check your vehicle's manual to be sure.

  • Thanks for the responses.  I really want the conv carseat to go in the middle of both vehicles since I feel that's the safest, but I wasn't sure how getting her in and out would go.  I may try it and do as PP said by getting in the back seat next to her to buckle her in.  If I find it's too difficult, I can always switch back to the side.

  • in my SUV she is in the middle. It feels safer to me plus I like actually sliding in to get her buckled in. I am able to sit there and feed her if I need to or change her on my lap in between stops.

In DH's car she is behind the passenger side because his car has a hump. I hate that she can't be in the middle in his car and always want to take mine when we are together.

  • She's on the passenger side in my car. DH doesn't have a carseat in his car (although we do have an extra one). My car has a hump so we can't place her in the middle.

  • We have 2 SUVs and a pickup truck.  We have Em's carseats behind the passenger seat.  In one of the SUVs, the second row is bucket seats, so the middle wasn't an option anyway. The reason we put them there is  so I can just look in the rearview mirror and see her from the reflection from the mirror on her seat. It works out great. I know that the recommendation is in the middle if possible, but this works for us.

We had the infant seat in the middle. I recently got a Honda Pilot and installed the convertible in it. I put it behind the passenger. The middle was just too far in for me to easily get her in and out every day.

  • She's in the middle of our land rover.  I have to sit in the backseat to get her out, but I'm really short (5'4").

  • It's in the middle of the backseat in my Ford Escape (compact SUV) and if we take DH's Civic then we're able to put it in the middle of the back seat as well. In either vehicle, I have to actually sit in the seat next to the carseat in order to get her in and out.

  • We both have sedans and place the car seat in the middle seat.  I'm tall so I would be OK putting a car seat in the middle seat of an SUV, but if I were shorter like most of the other women in my family I'd consider putting it on the side.
  • In my car, the middle.  I have an SUV though, so there is more room.  In DH's sedan, it's behind the passenger seat.  We don't' drive it as often though.

Ours is behind the drivers seat but I think about moving it to the middle sometimes.
