TTC After a Loss

TTC after MC -- wait a few cycles, or not?

I've heard and seen varying opinions as to when it's safe to start TTC after a MC. I went off the pill (after being on it for 10 years) and got pregnant 2 weeks later...but then lost the baby at 7w4d. I was fortunate in that the bleeding was only heavy for a day and was finished by about 3 days later, with an u/s to confirm everything had passed; but still devastating. The OB I had planned on seeing (first appt was scheduled for 8w) said I should wait until after one AF before TTC again -- she said there is a higher risk of another mc associated if you don't wait, and also it is difficult to date the baby. I am scared for this to happen again, but definitely ready for a baby and wanting to start right away! Has anyone else conceived right after a mc...with either good or bad results? Or should I wait until a cycle or two to start trying again?

You should listen to your doctor and wait at least 1 cycle after your mc if that is what they told you.  They are professionals for a reason.

  • I don't have experience with this because I've only ever had chemical pregnancies, but I tend to play by the rules. If I were in your position I would probably follow what the doctor has told you to do or get a second opinion from another doctor.

  • No one here will advise you to go against your doctor's orders.  You need to wait to restore your lining.  Also, give yourself some time to heal emotionally.  Finally, we don't generally have success stories on here.  We're all still trying.  Pregnant After A Loss is where the successful women are.

I am not trying to be rude, and I am sorry for your loss.  It's just that we can't tell you to disregard your medical instructions.  I know waiting is hard, but it's what you've got to do.

  • Listen to your doctor.  You don't want to regret anything.  Also, how much trust do you think your doctor will have in you if you get KU right away when she told you to wait?  Everyone's doctor recommends different things, based on their patient's history.

That being said, for an early loss it's quite common to be told to wait a cycle, if not more.  I was given the all clear after my 4th loss because it occurred so early (within a few days of my +HPT) and I got pregnant again, right away and miscarried again.

  • Listen to your doctor!  The need to be pregnant is very strong immediately after a mc.  Make sure that you mourn this loss before ttc again.  You need to be emotionally & physically ready for this process.

  • My OB advised us to wait two cycles, but he said the only reason they recommend two is for dating purposes. If we conceived after only one, it was no big deal. So we TTA for one cycle and didn't TTA for the second, but didn't make an effort to TTC either. I would listen to what your doctor says. It's not worth risking another m/c, in my opinion.
