I may be jumping the gun, but I have a few questions for you mamas

We've had quite a rocky road this pregnancy so far (I'm just about 8 weeks pregnant right now, but don't have a ticker yet because I am scared to put it back up and don't know if there are one or two babies in there) with a miscarriage scare very early on leading to find a baby with a heartbeat a few days later.  They also found a dark spot in the sac next to the baby which they couldn't really explain. At my next u/s (at 6w4d I think?), the doctor was sure the dark spot was a second sac with a newly developed second yolk sac (it wasn't there at the previous u/s a few days earlier).  We are now waiting until next week Tuesday for another u/s to let us know if the second baby continued to develop.

I know this is early, as we're not even sure that the second baby has pulled through (what we are definitely praying for), but I just wanted to know if this happened to anyone else here, where they found one baby, but not the second until a subsequent ultrasound?  My midwife said that it is possible to ovulate twice and have one baby that is just a little bit younger than the other, but I've never met anyone who that has happened to.  I was talking to my MOM bumpie friend who mentioned that may be more common to happen because my grandmother was a twin and I am pretty much spitting image of her and that side of the family.  I know it may be a long shot, but I'm talking to both babies every day and trying to hold out hope that I may bring home two beautiful children at the end of this year.

  • That wasn't my case, but I know quite a few here had that happen.  T&P for a pair of sticky babies for you!

  • At my first US we only saw one sac.. at the next one there were two! We were surprised but not TOO surprised bc my HCG levels had been so high.

Do you remember what they were?  They were initially questioning a molar pregnancy when they thought I was miscarrying. Between about 5 and 6.5 weeks my hcg levels went from 1,500 to 7,000 to almost 30,000.

This didn't happen to me either (that I know of b/c didn't find out until 14w), but there are a couple people on this board that saw one heartbeat and something else, and went back and saw a second heart beat.

Is your Grandma a fraternal or identical twin?  Fraternal twins are genetic, ID aren't, so I was just curious.  Your resemblance to her or that side of the family doesn't mean you have more of their genes in you and wouldn't affect whether or not you have the hyperovulation gene or not - which would only happen if fraternal twins run in the family.

Happy you got to see one thriving baby after your rocky road!  Hoping the time flies by between now and your next u/s!

I will definitely check out the FAQs for that, I looked in there but didn't see that part before I posted, thank you!  My grandma was a fraternal twin.  That is good to know about the looks part, because everyone in my family teases both my cousin and I about twins (since we've both been married) because she and I look exactly like my grandma did.  That's good to know that it is just as likely for my sister if it is likely for me, because she thinks that it isn't likely for her because she is a spitting image of my mom's side.  So, thanks for teaching me a little bit about genetics, because I'm seriously clueless about it mostly.  :)
