January 2012 Moms

Where did your LO's name rank in 2011?

Being that some of us had our babies in 2011 (and that although ours were the first in 2012, I'm sure some of the trends from 2011 influenced our choices), I was curious where everyone's names for their LO appeared in the SSA list for 2011.  Also, had you known last year's trends, would you have changed your child's name?

Thomas was #63 though his middle name (Fremont) did not appear in the top 1000.

We never took the popularity of the name into consideration when we named DS; it was a name we chose well before we got pregnant and had meaning for us.  If we have another boy, we have been planning on using the name William. I asked DH if the popularity of the name (#3 for 2011) would influence our choice; he said he liked the name and would use it regardless of the ranking.

16 on a list I saw yesterday, 14 on this one. and we would not have changed his name--DH had his first son's named picked since he was a kid

  • Not anywhere in the top 25.  We did consider popularity of names in our choice because we both have very common names.
  • She is 117th. I was surprised, Rachel is a pretty common name. It was 23rd ten years ago.

  • Elijah is 18. We had the name picked out forever so it didn't bother us.

  • Hasn't been on the top 1000 for the past 12 years.  That is how I pick my kids names....they are not very popular.  Her name is Cordelia.

  • Number 1! lol.  We didn't care about poularity.  It was the only name DH and I agreed on so that is his name.  Has nothing to do with popularity or the twilight movies. BTW, I do not know a single kid or person with the name.  Maybe it is bigger somewhere out of the midwest.

  • Her name (Kai) was 202 for boys names and 887 for girls names. (We knew going into this that we were giving a boys name to our daughter.)

ETA: Out of the 32 infants at our daycare center, there are, of course, two Kais. The other is a boy. What were the chances of that?

  • Apparantly Lily was 15th.  I had no idea. THis is particularly amusing because when we announced her name my Dad said "why Lily? you never hear that name?' (albeit my dad clearly is oblivioius)

ETA whats funny also is that if we had had a boy he would have been Liam which was also ranked 15th for boys.  LOL

  • Alice - 142 Elaine - 697

Both are family names, popularity wouldn't have played a factor unless they were top 5

So cute!  I also have an Alice, Christine 731 (I really thought this would be more popular!)

For giggles, I did the other kiddos:

    Lucille (455) Therese (not ranked)

    Charles (62) Frederick (540)

We also choose family names, so rank would not have really swayed us.

I ALSO have an Alice!  Uh oh, maybe Alice will be higher up in 2012 :)  And her MN is Olivia, which is in the top 10 - I wanted it to be her first name but didn't want her to be one of a bunch of Olivias in her class.  Looks like that didn't work out for Alice either!  Oh well, it's a fabulous name, and I love that it's old fashioned - I think it was #1 back in the 19teens.

I didn't realize Alice was so popular on our board.  As long there aren't 5 other Alice's in her class, I'm not worried.  Both mine and DH's names where #1 when we were born.  I consider #142 a huge improvement.

DD is now #80 and was #114 on last years list when I chose it. Popularity did play a factor in our choice, I liked lily and Olivia but didn't like that they were in the top 20. We wanted a name that was a real name, wasn't too weird but wasn't common enough for her to have like five others in her class. (my niece Abigail is one of four in her kindergarten class and there are only 20 kids total! That's 20%!!)

Our kiddo has the same name. I didn't want something super popular, but I'm cool with those rankings.

  • Jude - 155

Popularity didn't factor in too much since we didn't want to use any of the popular ones anyway, for other reasons.

Our first son's name, Gus, isn't on the top 1000 list at all for the last 12 years.

  • First name is 81, second name is 970.  Not expecting anyone with his name in his class, but the middle name is from his great grandfather who shares his birthday.  I was expecting the first name to be more common, but all the better I suppose.

  • Oh goodness, there are really that many Nevaehs to make it #25??

We have an Anna (# 38) Grace (# 16). DS is an Owen (#58 in 2008 when he was born, 44 now)

    DS 5 years old
    DD 2 years old

I was thinking the same thing.  I hate that name!

Kjersten wasn't on the top 1000.  Kiersten was 882.

  • Rain is unranked, and my H and I created her middle name, Evangelie.

But Rayne was #810, and Evangeline was #286.

My H and I hate popular names. His name was #13 when he was born and is still in the top 25. My name was #37 when I was born. It is now in the #300's, but we both grew up knowing several people with our names. My maiden name was at one point #3 in the nation, too. I'm not sure if it still is, but is very popular.
