Baby Names

I'm afraid that our boy name will become a girl name.

I need to preface this by saying that I strongly dislike unisex names, especially on boys.

That being said, we like Evan for a boy.  I feel like it is definitely a boy name... but I've thought that about lots of names and then they become more common for girls (Morgan, Taylor, Charlie, Parker).

Do you think Evan will become a unisex name?

Sometimes I think the only safe bets are super traditional, masculine names - Joseph, Richard, etc.

Re: I'm afraid that our boy name will become a girl name.

  • There is an actress named Evan.  Evan Rachel Wood, I think.  So it has been used on a girl, and may get used on one more because of her and her fame.

  • I know 3 evans total (2 are girls and one is a boy)

  • There are so many names out there that get the gender switch that no name would surprise me at this point.
  • No way. Evan is a boy's name. I would never think of a girl being named that!

    No boy name is safe.

The use of Charlie on a girl makes my eyes bleed.

I completely agree, I don't know that there is a name you could choose that would be completely safe, at thins point I wouldn't be shocked to hear of a Hank Juliette or a Trevor Rose /sigh.

  • I don't think any name is safe anymore.  Evan is absolutely a boy name but I could see people naming their daughters Evan.

  • I can definitely see the possibility there. It has a bit of a feminine sound to it and I think I've already seen it suggested on this board. And as pp pointed out, there is the actress. If you as are strongly against unisex as you say, I might recommend considering a more masculine name. Just remember, there's always going to be the possibility that some crazy chick will name her girl Joseph, but at least I don't expect those masculine names to become a trend.

  • I've heard Evan for a girl before though spelled Evyn (ugh) no boys name is safe, DS is Donald and it's been used on girls!

  • Agree, I think no name is really "safe". I know 3 Logans that are girls and it's my nephew's name! My DD is Taylor but I've never considered that a boy's name actually, just unisex. Always liked Taylor for a girl and Tyler for a boy. (Hear Tyler is becoming popular with girls! Sad ) Anyway, we are using Dylan for our baby boy and I think people use it for girls. According to ssa.gov, it's still more popular for boys, thank God! I bet Evan is the same way.

  • Just because some people use a boy's name on girls does not automatically make it a girl's name.  It takes years for that switch to happen (like in the case of Ashley, for example).  Since Evan is not super common on girls right now, I wouldn't expect it to become a "girls name" any time soon.  Again, no name is safe!
  • Yep, Evan's already considered a unisex name, although it's still predominantly used for boys. It fits the Eden, Eve and Evie trend. I still would use it on a boy in a heartbeat, though; I don't feel this way about most unisex names.

I know a girl Evan.  And there's Evan Rachel Wood.  :(  But I definitely think of it as a boy name.

I personally know more female Evans (3) than male Evans (1). Like PPs have said, however, no name is really safe these days!

  • I would use Evanna for a girl. Evan I don't think is safe, but I wouldn't use it on a girl.

  • To the statistics!

According to Name Nerds, which aggregates the spellings of names in the top 1,000 and beyond, 2010 gave us

    9,853 boys named Evan/Evin/Evyn/Even/Evon (rank #44)

    and

only 163 girls named Evan/Evyn/Evann/Evynn/Evynne/Evin (rank #1063 ? though they did count the 8 Evons under "Yvonne" rather than "Evan")

We'll have to wait and see what the 2011 numbers look like to see how it's trending, but right now, rest assured that Evan is still a boys' name, 60:1.

  • I feel like Evan Rachel Wood is the exception, not the rule. Then again, nothing is 100%. If you love the name, go for it. I think it will be awhile before Evan hits a tipping point.
  • I know a little girl named Evan, but she is always called Evie!

  • I have never heard of Evan being used for a girl other than Evan Rachel Wood.

DD is Evangeline and we have had a few people try to nickname her Evan. Both DH and I are anti-nickname, so we always let people know that we prefer Evangeline.

  • I knew two girls named Evan. One in high school and she called herself Evie and one in college and they called her Evan. I've never met a boy named Evan lol sorry. (I know its more a boys name though!)

  • I consider it a boy's name, but come to think of it, the only Evans I know are both girls in their early thirties.

  • Nothing surprises me anymore! I think any name can become a girl name thses days!
  • The only Evans I know are all boys, but I can definitely see it being used for girls.  It's very similar to Devon/Devin, and I know several girls with that name.

Sadly there is never a safe bet.  A few weeks ago I used Stanley as an example of names you would never expect on a girl.  I picked it because IMO Stanley is so bad I wouldn't even name a human boy Stanley.  Wouldn't you know lurker came out with "my daughter is Stanley and it's a perfectly fine name for a girl!  You don't know my life! etc."

It is a crazy world in which we live.

That said, I wouldn't consider Evan unisex.

  • Ugh, I hate that Charlie and Parker especially are being used more on girls. They are SUCH boy names to me. With Evan, I think it will probably become used increasingly for girls but it's such a classic name for boys already I don't think it'll lose favor for boys as much.

Considered unisex by whom, I wonder? I was curious (since I've never heard of a girl named Evan) and checked the SSA list. Last year Evan was #40 for boys and not in the top 1000 for girls.
