I need to preface this by saying that I strongly dislike unisex names, especially on boys.
That being said, we like Evan for a boy. I feel like it is definitely a boy name... but I've thought that about lots of names and then they become more common for girls (Morgan, Taylor, Charlie, Parker).
Do you think Evan will become a unisex name?
Sometimes I think the only safe bets are super traditional, masculine names - Joseph, Richard, etc.
Re: I'm afraid that our boy name will become a girl name.
I completely agree, I don't know that there is a name you could choose that would be completely safe, at thins point I wouldn't be shocked to hear of a Hank Juliette or a Trevor Rose /sigh.

To the statistics!
According to Name Nerds, which aggregates the spellings of names in the top 1,000 and beyond, 2010 gave us
9,853 boys named Evan/Evin/Evyn/Even/Evon (rank #44)
and
only 163 girls named Evan/Evyn/Evann/Evynn/Evynne/Evin (rank #1063 ? though they did count the 8 Evons under "Yvonne" rather than "Evan")
We'll have to wait and see what the 2011 numbers look like to see how it's trending, but right now, rest assured that Evan is still a boys' name, 60:1.

I know a little girl named Evan, but she is always called Evie!
I have never heard of Evan being used for a girl other than Evan Rachel Wood.
DD is Evangeline and we have had a few people try to nickname her Evan. Both DH and I are anti-nickname, so we always let people know that we prefer Evangeline.
I consider it a boy's name, but come to think of it, the only Evans I know are both girls in their early thirties.
ditto :-(
Sadly there is never a safe bet. A few weeks ago I used Stanley as an example of names you would never expect on a girl. I picked it because IMO Stanley is so bad I wouldn't even name a human boy Stanley. Wouldn't you know lurker came out with "my daughter is Stanley and it's a perfectly fine name for a girl! You don't know my life! etc."
It is a crazy world in which we live.
That said, I wouldn't consider Evan unisex.
Considered unisex by whom, I wonder? I was curious (since I've never heard of a girl named Evan) and checked the SSA list. Last year Evan was #40 for boys and not in the top 1000 for girls.
