Size Differences

What was the biggest size difference your multiples measured?  I'll be 26 weeks tomorrow and our di/di twin boys are 5 ounces apart (A is 2 lbs,2 oz and B is 1 lb, 13 oz).  I know since they each have their own placenta we aren't worried about TTTS or anything like that, I've just heard throughout my pregnancy that the closer they are in weight the better...

There were times when mine measured up to 9 ounces different, and we did have to worry about TTTS, but were told anything up to a pound is no big deal.

By the way, when my boys were born there was only an ounce difference between them, so ultrasound measurements can definitely be off!!!

  • At 36 weeks, A measured at 5 pounds, 12 ounces and B measured at 7 pounds.

    At birth (37 weeks 3 days), A weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces and B weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces.

    Shenanigans.

  • I think as long as they are within 20% of eachother then it's fine.  Those are perfect weights.

  • During my u/s the doctors said they were within a couple ounces of each other. Imagine our surprise when they were born at 6lbs 2 oz and 4lbs 12oz. They said that baby A's (bigger) placenta was growing over baby B's. I don't know if I buy that explanation because they frequently made comments about not seeing much of baby B's cord and said it was her position. When she was born she had a very short cord so I suspect our issues started far earlier than that, but just a hunch.

At any rate, I don't take a lot of faith in U/S measurements as reliable.

  • My di/di girls were always a couple ounces different and were 4lbs 6 oz and 4lbs 12oz at birth, so the measurements were pretty accurate for them. From about 1 month on, they have always been a pound apart.

Mine always measured within a few oz of each other, even at the very end. They were born with more than a pound difference in weight, with Baby B being the smaller one, and measuring smaller than the 36w growth estimate. And this was on high level MFM office equipment. It's not a perfect science.

I think a 20% growth discordance is when doctors start getting concerned.

  • My di/di girls were the same weight until the last few weeks (born at 35 w 3d), and were 5.6 lbs and 6.1 when they were born. I think their weight difference is pretty much the same now, the bigger baby is still that much bigger.

  • From about 16 weeks forward mine were always right around 1lb difference.  When they were born 4lbs 15oz and 6lbs 2oz.  They are 22 months now, and the larger guy probably has about 5 lbs on the smaller one.

  • Mine have always measured within an ounce or two of each other, but at my last appt (29 wks) they were six ounces apart at 3.1 and 2.11. Doc wasn't concerned b/c it was a 12% difference, and I don't put too much thought into those u/s measurements.

Mine measured a pound apart at the last ultrasound (were 1 1/2 lbs. apart at birth), but one of mine was IUGR.

  • I forget when exactly but there was one appt where they measured almost 20 percentile points apart. Made me a little nervous, especially since they'd tracked fairly closely together other than that. At birth though they were only 3 oz and 1/4" apart. And since then, there was a stage (6-15m or so) where Alex was usually about 2 lbs heavier and 1" taller than Will but since then he's generally been only about 1/2" taller and 1/2-1 lb heavier, so nothing noticeable.

  • Ours measured about the same for a long time, then A fell off her curve and we delivered at 35w with a 28% ultrasound growth discordance (turned out to be over 30%). She was IUGR though.
  • About 30% difference at 28 weeks.  They were estimated 1lb 12oz and 2lb 10oz.  We delivered later that day due to IUGR and reverse end diastolic flow of the little one.
  • These were our u/s weights... they were the same at 12w and 16w...

    19.5w: 10 oz, 12 oz (2 oz difference)

    24w: 1 lb 3 oz, 1 lb 5 oz (2 oz difference)

    28w: 2 lb 6 oz, 2 lb 10 oz (4 oz difference)

32w: 3 lb 7 oz, 4 lb 5 oz (14 oz difference... this is when they started getting concerned)

    34w: 4 ;b 2 oz, 5 lb 4 oz (18 oz difference)

36w: 4 lb 15 oz, 6 lb 11 oz (28 oz difference... this is when they decided to deliver)

  • U/s measurements always showed them within a few ounces. When they were born, DD was 7 lbs15 oz and DS was 6 lbs9oz. So, they were almost 1.5 lbs different.
