Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How are planning to transition to WCM?

I was thinking maybe to go really slow because he is still happily taking in 4 6oz bottles a day. Yesterday I tested out giving him 2oz of WCM mixed with 4oz of formula and holy cow he pooped right away and it smelled like vomit and gave him diaper rash :( . But he has had 2oz of WCM in a sippy before with his pancake at breakfast and he took it just fine and no poops or rash. Idk I know 2oz is nothing and I was just kind of testing how he took it and now i'm scared about the transition. Are there other ways to transition besides cold turkey and mixing? I will ask the pedi how long I can keep him on formula (I feel like I read somewhere it was 18 months?) if thats true I don't want to wait that long but somewhere in the middle. Just wondering what everyone's plans are.

He eats like a champ so I don't know about Go and Grow. he just loves his food and bottles equally it seems

Thanks guys!

Re: How are planning to transition to WCM?

  • When my freezer stash is down to only a couple hundred ounces, I plan on adding an ounce to a bottle to start.  Then increasing it depending on how she does.  Hopefully, she'll take to it well.

Maybe go down to just 1 ounce.

  • DS doesn't take bottles, and I was home to BF directly until 2 weeks ago. So about a month ago, I started offering WCM in a straw cup after meals. Now, he gets WCM with meals at daycare and breastfeeds at home. I do also offer him WCM after meals at home. He only drinks about 2-4 oz a day.

How long BM/formula is important is dependent on how much other food baby eats. My son is NOT that into solids (although it is getting better), so I wouldn't push WCM with him yet. But some of his friends eat tons of foods, so milk is a less important part of their diet.

  • We won't transition on WCM, rather almond milk.  And, we'll do it in a sippy.

DS2 won't take a bottle, so we've been giving him water in a sippy to get him used to that.  Somewhere between 12 months and when I wean him at 18 months, we'll start introducing almond milk.

    We're in no rush.

I don't think that there are other ways of transitioning other than slowly and cold turkey.  You kinda just pick one and try it.

I would start with it at the same temp as your LO's formula.  If LO takes it, then you slowly start giving it to LO colder and colder until it's straight out of the fridge temp.

If LO refuses, you might try sweetening a bit with a natural sweetener because BM (although I don't know about formula) is sweet, and so baby is used to that sweetness.  Then, you gradually reduce the sweetener.

I'm not advocating giving your child a sugar-laden bottle of WCM, rather just a bit to try to match the sweetness of what LO is used to.

well he really likes it and didn't seem to mind it in his bottle it was just the horrible smelling diaper like 20 minutes after he drank the mixture and diaper rash that concerns me

I still have a big FS but I started introducing cow's milk to DD this weekend (1-2oz) by itlself or mixed with BM. She hates it. Cold, warm, mixed with BM or by itself. I think I will have to give almond milk a try.

  • I give her WCM in a straw sippy cup with meals every once in a while to get her used to it. She didn't seem to like it much the first few times, but last night she drank it better. I think it might be that I didn't warm in up, but left it cold. So before she wasn't liking that, but now she is more used to drinking cold water from her sippy too, so it wasn't so bad to her. I have noticed especially this week, she has been cutting back nursing more, like doesn't want to nurse before dinner like usual and nurses less before her naps. So I'm not sure what that means. Maybe she is just ready for nursing less and less, which would make our weaning process easier, for sure.
