Preemies

IV scars on toddler preemie?

My now 2.5 year olds were 32 weekers and both spent their first month in the NICU. Just recently I noticed that they both have scars on the backs of their hands in the same spots, and on their legs. I can only assume they are from IVs in the NICU. Has anyone else noticed scars on their older preemies?

My DD has a scar on her belly from the tape they used for her umbilical line. I doubt anyone else would notice it but I know its there. My brother was a preemie and he still has some scars from IVs too. Again, only my mom would notice them though.
  • Yes my son has them as well. He is almost 2.5yrs old also.

  • Several scars are still clearly visible.  In the last days in the NICU, DD blew two lines right on her temples (one on each side).  I think I can see them more clearly than anyone else.  I tell DD that they are "beauty marks."  Wink

  • DD has lots of them on her hands and feet.  She is 4.5 years old, but spent 88 days in the NICU being poked and prodded.

  • I think it depends on their skin and whether they scar or get keloids easily.. DD had her fair share of pokes and has little white dots on her hands and wrists. DS got a TON of pokes, IVs, transfusions whathave you and you can't really tell apart from a really bad looking lump on his foot. Even then it's just a lumpy spot and doesn't look any different from the surrounding skin. I have a cousin who was preemie and is now 16. She still has some white spots on her hands from IVs :(
  • I have been looking for IV scars and haven't found any so far (I can't remember how often they re-did his IV but he later had a PICC line, plus twice weekly foot sticks, and some other poking and prodding I'm probably not remembering. Is it ever possible that the scars only show up once a child is older?

I never really noticed them before...I wonder if it is just that as they get bigger their skin changes a bit. Baby skin is just so wrinkly and soft.

No IV scars, but we've got a big one on her forehead from the CPAP. Happily, her hair is long enough to cover it at this point, but it's pretty noticeable.

What on the CPAP caused the scar? (The NICU always had a huge hat on Jack while he was on CPAP, and I guess I didn't think to ask what they were hiding under it!)

  • I noticed DS's scar on his hand when he was about 5 months I think?  I can still see it now, but it isn't so obvious that a stranger would notice.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • I only see the scars from the heel pricks for blood draws on each of their heels.  They didn't have IVs for very long and didn't blow any that I know of so they don't really have those scars., but their heels have tons of straight lines on them from the heel pricks.
