Pregnant after IF

Stopping Metformin?

I started Metformin while we were TTC and I've heard conflicting things about when to stop taking it during pregnancy. My doctor said I could stop at 12 weeks, as she said there is no evidence that continuning when pregnant helps (or harms) myself or the baby.

When did you stop taking Metformin?

Re: Stopping Metformin?

  • Last time they had me stop at 12 weeks and almost immediately after I was diagnosed with GD.  (I am not overwieght but was PG with twins.)  This go round the MFM told me it is better and much safer to stay on it the entire pregnancy even though it crosses the placenta.

  • My OB has me still taking my Metformin, he said because of my IR, it can help prevent GD if you are already IR.  I take 850 mg 2x/day.

  • I stopped between 8-9 weeks.  I weaned myself off it because I was scared of what would happen if I stopped cold turkey - my RE told me I could stop at 7w5d.  I'm not IR, though, I was only on Met to help improve my egg quality - I think people who are IR stay on it longer than I did.

  • I am going to continue to take it for the entire pregnancy.  The MFM suggested that since I have PCOS with IR it could lower the risk of GD.  I did wean myself down from 2000mg/day to 1000/mg a day when I got my BFP but the MFM says 1000mg is an adequate dose.
