TTC After a Loss

Fertility after miscarriage

See siggy for history. I went to my OB today for my checkup (4 weeks after my D & C). I started my period yesterday. He said the good news is I am more fertile after being pregnant. I don't want to do IVF/ICSI again: too expensive, PITA, and emotionally tramautic if it doesn't work. Thinking of trying on our own or trying IUI agian (we tried 2 times already). Too soon to TTC again? I thought I was pretty good, then went to my appt today and just being there brought back memories plus all the pregnant ladies in there made me jealous. I know my DH would be fine with whatever we would like to do. We have already decided to adopt and we are getting together our paperwork. Luckily the agency we have decided to go with does not charge an application fee. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Re: Fertility after miscarriage

  • As pp mentioned, I would discuss with your doctor how soon you can start to TTC again.  Some doctors recommend one cycle and others recommend up to 3.

  • I agree with all the PP.  I think if your doctor gave you the all clear medically, you are fine to go.  However, I think you and DH need to have a long thoughtful discuscusion about whether you both feel ready emotionally to start the process again.
I have heard it said that right after a pregnancy (or loss) is the most fertile time for your body, but I think many women on this board can attest that this is not always the case.
    Whatever you decide, good luck

    PgAL/PAL welcome, always!
  • I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm guessing your RE is over-seeing your IF treatment and not your OB?  I would go by whatever my RE said first- they are the IF experts.  It's a common thing people say that you're more fertile after a miscarriage, but I don't know how much truth there is to that (never been giving research for one side or the other).  Also, your fertility won't increase YH's sperm count and motility.  Good luck to you!

  • Best of luck to you whatever you decide. As pp said, even if you try doesn't mean you have to stop the adoption process. I'm sure you and DH will come to the right decision. You have been through a lot and deserve happiness in whatever you choose!
