SO not ready for baby

Well... mentally we are prepared - PHYSICALY, the nursery is still DH's drum / guitar room, the windows are in need of replacement, the walls need to be painted, I have no baby clothes, supplies, or bedding.

So far all I have is a used monitor, crib and matress, and an infant carrier (not a car seat). To make matters worst, my brother's wedding is July 14th and so mom and sis are not planning to have a shower for us till Mid August (bout 2 weeks before I am due) and sis even suggested we wit til baby is born. Note- I am normally an over-planner and ocd when it comes to getting my s%*# together - this sort of thing is terribly stressful to an overplanner.

Anybody else out there in a mess and counting down???

Re: SO not ready for baby

  • we haven't done anything.  and probably won't for a while.  I was going to wash some of DS's baby clothes today and then realized it was wayyyy too early haha

sounds like you are heading in the right direction with what you have, just wanted to throw my 2 cents in that you aren't going to want to use a used crib mattress for your child.  there are theories that link used mattresses to SIDS.

  • DH and I are in the middle of a cross country move- into a camper until December. So we haven't bought anything yet and only have a few hand me downs. Also baby won't even have a room until we make another move across country again in December and find a place to live there. So yea we are in a bit of a mess as well! The way I see it as long as I get him clothes and something to sleep in then all will be good- newborns don't need a whole lot anyways!

(And as much as I make it sound light and breezy it is an internal struggle- there is nothing I want more then a painted well planned out and set up nursery!)

Our nursery is still filled with random boxes from when we moved in 4 months ago, we have maybe 5-8 onesies and 1 box of diapers. That's all we have for LO at this point. Work cut my hours less month and I only worked 4 days the whole month, it basically wiped out our savings/ nursery/ maternity leave fund. As we play catch up on bills, and start saving again we haven't been able to focus on supplies for LO yet. And it's driving me crazy!!! We are really relaying alot on our shower for most of our items but it's not until mid July. I'll be 31 weeks at time of shower and I'm just hoping that will allow me enough time to clean, organize, and prepare for LO.

  • That would make me nervous too, waiting until 2 weeks before to find out what you're getting at the shower and what you'll need to buy.  I would guess a lot of the big things people will go in on and buy earlier so you'll see that they were at least purchased from your registry.  If it makes you feel any better look at all those people on 'I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant' who make due on 0 notice :)

Yes I am also feeling overwhelmed! We have registered and shower is in June. The contractor still has to come in a finish a bedroom so we can shuffle our son to start the nursery. It's driving me crazy and DH doesn't realize we r short on time.

  • Someone told me when I was expecting DD1, "All a newborn really needs is some diapers and a set of boobs." I totally get wanting to have everything neat, organized and ready asap but don't stress! You've got plenty of time!

  • I am right there with you! We have yet to decide which room to use. We are going to try to get some flooring installed by June. DH will be gone for the next 6 weeks so I guess that we will get our stuff done in July! Oh, and I am also a compulsive over planner.

  • I live in a two bedroom flat in England, we are not even doing a nursery because we are going to have company for about two months.  I've started to buy clothes in newborn, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months.  Due to our work schedules, we really can't get into it until July and that's fine.  I'm due the beginning of September and we are just going to create a plan and I would suggest you do the same.  It makes me feel like we have made progress.

Create a plan... pick one date over the next few weekends and get all the stuff out of the room, replace the window and get some paint.  I bet you and your DH could do it in a weekend.  Done and check.

We plan to buy nearly everything when we are in the States when I will be 32/34 weeks and will do everything after that.  And I am an planner to a T.  Take a deep breath, it will be fine.

As for the shower, two weeks does seem to be cutting it close.  Could they do early August?  Since you do have a big family event in July maybe ask if you could help with the shower to relieve your mom of some of the details to get the date you would prefer?

Good luck, I am sure it will all work out.

I think you need to relax... I have two onsies and that's it.  My shower isn't until mid August and I'm due Sept 22nd.  The nursery is still full of boxes from moving, which isn't really a big deal because DH and I haven't even agreed on a color scheme yet. I have no doubt that everything will come together in the end... And if it doesn't, I'm sure DH and my mom won't mind making last minute BRU runs for me.

  • Freaking out!! I want to get the nursery ready while I still have this 2nd tri energy! However, we'll be converting our main floor guest room to the nursery and moving the guest room to the finished basement. My grandfather is visiting next week, which is awesome, but I don't want to make him walk up and down the basement stairs (he's in his upper 80s) so I cannot do anything until after his visit. I've got paint picked out, some nursery items already purchased, etc etc. I want to get started so badly! LOL I think Memorial day weekend will be a good weekend for it. Hubbie goes back on day-shift next week so I won't have to do it all alone. Just need a big dose of patience - we really do have plenty of time.

  • Deep breaths.

The only thing I would worry about at the moment is getting an infant carseat. You will need that to leave the hospital. You can either buy it yourself or discuss with your family so you know that is done.

Other than that, you are as set as you need to be. You can decorate/fix up your nursery -- you don't need your shower for that stuff. Voice your concerns to your husband and get to work. It will make you feel better.

I was in your exact mindset with DD.  What I didn't know was I was having a surprise shower, and got almost everything I needed.  So my advice to you is...RESIST THE URGE TO SHOP! :)

  • I wouldn't worry, there's plenty of time. Our nursery is still my office, so we have a lot of furniture to move before we do anything else. We probably won't get to that until sometime in June or July. My shower isn't until late July so depending on what we receive, I don't think we'll really dig into the nursery until August.

I have started buying clothes, cloth diapers, and some wall art, but that's about it.

For DS, we had wood floors put in his room and then DH painted when I was about 7-8 months. I ordered the crib around 28 weeks. Don't stress, you have plenty of time. Plus, like pp said, a baby doesn't need very much.

  • I've done nothing, either. I bought a baby food maker yesterday because it was a really good deal, and I need to replace bottles, crib sheets and newborn clothes - but I doubt I'll do anything before 30 weeks. Last time, DS' crib wasn't even set up until after he was born because he just slept in a bassinet. You've got some time.

This is what my mom said!

I think you're doing fine and don't need to stress! We live in a 1-bedroom apartment and hope to move before or soon after LO arrives (our lease is up Oct. 31--fantastic timing). So we have NOTHING organized or set up and basically have no idea if we'll still be living in this crappy apartment. I'm definitely counting on our shower (mid-July) for a lot of our stuff, as well as summer garage sales for things we can buy used.

I'd say make a detailed list of things you absolutely need before baby arrives so you can quickly supplement after your shower. You'll be fine :)

  • I get why you're freaking out.  The only thing I want done is the nursery.  We're painting this weekend and duing the mural next weekend.  We have a crib set up without a mattress and we have some diapers and some bibs that my Mom made.  We don't have much of anything other than the car seat in terms of baby things though, which is ok.

Since refinishing the dressers for the nursery will take me a few weeks, I'm going to start that in June and go from there.  It'll all get done--we do still have the whole summer!

  • I don't plan on even starting the nursery for another two months. I just don't get what you panic is.....
  • We have a crib, but no mattress.  No carseat.  We have some clothes that were given to us, but I'm not sure if any are newborn sized.  Ooh, we did clean out the room and paint it.  So, we've got you there.  I'm not due until September though, so I'm not really that concerned.  Even if this baby comes early, we still hae a good three months+.
  • we have ten outfits, that's it! I'm in no panic or rush and don't plan to be. Stress free is the way to be! Wink

  • We haven't really done much to get ready for LO, but I have all the essentials.  It seems before I can start cleaning out the bedroom for DD I have to do xyz first.  Make a list of what needs done and give yourself a deadline.  That way it's a bunch of small projects rather than one huge project.  My goal is to have the room ready by July.

I would not like having my shower 2 weeks before my due date.  You'll be uncomfortable and the last thing you'll want to do is get all the new stuff prepped for the baby.  I don't understand why they have to wait that long after your brother's wedding to do the shower.  Can someone else throw the shower for you??

  • LO's nursery is currently were our bed is, our room is in remodel mode have a closet framed but no drywall, all rooms need painted, the carpet in the eventual nursery is stained and in dire need of replacement, we have clothes and the crib is in layaway but the room is the biggest issue living a 3 bedroom house but only have one bedroom that is almost the same size as our king mattress about a foot around each side of the mattress.  Luckily, my parents bought us the travel kit so we have a stroller and car seat at their house but don't get it until the baby shower.

  • Raises hand!

We still don't know what room we're putting DD in, which will determine what furniture we need to buy & if we need to move my office equipment & furniture since I WFH.  I am overwhelmed with double stroller options, we need a bassinet b/c last time we used a borrowed one, and I have to figure out p/t daycare for DS b/c our current DCP situation is not ideal for two LOs.

  • Add me to the "haven't done a damn thing" list!
  • We just executed a contract on a new house today and won't be moving in until the end of June. I plan to start working on the nursery at some point in July. I'm a planner, too, and there are parts of me that want to just get it all done, but in the end I also don't want to have it done and then have 2-3 months to twiddle my thumbs and just wait. We have plenty of time. Even in the worst case of delivering early or going on bedrest, it will get done.

  • We have about 5 gender neutral sleepers and 2 packages of pacifiers. That's about it. I did order some cloth diapers last night but otherwise we haven't done much. Our nursery is still DHs office...which won't be moving into our basement until that is finished [of which it half is..there's not even carpet yet]. I probably won't buy much if any clothes, because I don't really want a bunch of yellow/green stuff and can't find it used anywhere. I doubt the nursery will be done in the next few months.

For DD2 I didn't even pack a hospital bag until I was already in labor. I figure the more I have left to do, the quicker my pregnancy will go ;-)

  • OH I am a mess/wreck when it comes to having anything done for the baby/baby room.

We just moved and bought a house so we have spent last 4 months remodeling. I still don't have furniture in any room- we have 1 bed and 1 couch, 2 chairs, a kitchen table, and a crib. That is it. I have like 10 rooms to fill and decorate etc.

DH has been awesome and we are thisclose to being done with the remodeling, but I am waiting for after my shower to work on the baby room b/c I know we will be getting lots of "stuff" and I don't want to run out and get it all now, and then end up with doubles.  I can just see it now... middle of summer, 9months preggo and flipping out that nothing is done. Plus I'm a teacher so I go back to work right before baby is due... talk about timing.

I was waiting on the hospital bag, too and wound up being induced. I was sent right from my OB office to the hospital with no time to go home for my stuff! DH had to try to put stuff together for me and I ended up not having most of what I wanted. This will probably be the only thing I do really early this time! I already made a list of what's going in my bag and baby's bag, and rational me has to remind psycho me on a daily basis that it's WAY TOO EARLY to pack.

  • Our nursery is still our guest room with random baby clothes and a boba carrier in it.  I'm not overly concerned because he'll be sleeping in our room for a while anyway.  I haven't had a shower yet (two are planned) and I don't want to buy too much before I see what is needed after people have given gifts.  You'll be fine and it will all work out.

Haven't done a thing yet except buy some prefolds and covers for diapering. I already had the nursery furniture, it was my old baby furniture, and my mom's old baby furniture before that. It needs a new lick of paint and some new knobs, and it'll be ready. I've got a shower in a month, and since it's just family who I know they won't even look at my registry, much less buy from it, I'm figuring on getting a lot of clothes and blankets (hopefully not diapers--I do hope they pay attention to the invite where it says we're CDing!). Past that, nada. And I'm not doing anything else until we've moved.

  • Pffft, we are still house hunting. We have a tiny little 3/2 house, & soon to be 4 kids. You do the math.

This is my plan too. I'll start in summer when I'm off work. All I have a crib. And the only reason we have that is because my parents bought it for us and it was on sale. I have about 4 sleepers/onesies that I have bought from garage sales.

I won't even have a shower probably until October/November- we do them  after the baby is born in our area.

On the plus side, my sister just had a baby in February so she will be outgrowing all her bouncers/swings etc and I won't have to buy those. We'll buy our carseat/stroller probably in summer.
