Yeah, I'd definitely never use a top 5 name (or a top 50 name, for that matter). But we are planning on naming this baby Oliver if it's a boy, and that jumped from 88 to 78 in the past year. We really like it so I think we're sticking with it and hoping that in a few years it won't move up the charts too much.
FWIW, I am SO over Mason and I think you could pick something a lot better. There's nothing wrong with it, but I don't see why everyone thinks it's so great. Without knowing your style, I can't really suggest any names not ending in -n. But it seems like soooo many boys names these days end in -n and I like that you're looking for something that doesn't.

We named our son Mason in 2008 when it wasn't nearly as popular as it is now (was in the mid to low 30's) and to be honest I rarely hear another Mason. He starts school in the fall so we'll see if that changes anything but to be honest it doesn't bother me. I love his name and would rather love the name I give my child rather than pick another one just because the one I love got too popular. But that's just me and I respect that everybody is different. Anyway, all of our favourite boy names ended with 'n' except Callum. Good luck!!

It doesn't at all surprise me that Mason is #2. I know of 3 babies born in '11 named Mason in just our circle of friends.
What about Maddox?
This. Then, I'd stay far, far away from baby name online forums!!
