Adoption

Introduction

Hi.  I have been on so many of these boards over the past couple of years and I am finally ending up here...with much excitement and nervousness.  Today my husband and I took the steps to financially prepare us for our adoption journey.  We are meeting with our agent and attourney hopefully in the next week to put down our deposit.  I am so excited for everything to come but EXTREMELY nervous about the financial side.  FINGERS CROSSED that the adoption tax credit is extended if we don't place by the end of the year.  I am curious is anyone else felt the financial burden and how did you cope.  We saved up half the funds and borrowed the rest.  I know thats not what the journey is about but i want to make sure i can provide everything for our son and daughter...and with such a large amount of money going out I feel so nervous!!!!  We are doing our adoption through a private agent and her husband who is an attourney....we were referred by our ob/gyn who used the same people.  Any input or advice will be helpful.:)
After three miscarriages and one ectopic pregnancy we are currently pursuing adoption. " Born not from our flesh, but born in our heart. You were longed for and wanted and loved from the start."

Re: Introduction

  • Congrats on taking the first steps, that's exciting!

We are definitely very conscious of our financial situation in light of our adoption plans.  Our adoption will cost ~$22k + legal fees (less than $2k estimated).  We are in major savings mode right now (I'm in grad school, so we're not submitting our application until early 2013), and we have about 22% saved so far.  We plan to have the first part of the fees ($8250 I think) saved before we send in our application, which will cover everything through the home study and get us on the "list".  The rest of our fees are due at placement, so our plan is just to continue saving as much as we can during that timeframe.  My ILs have graciously offered to help us out if we don't have the full amount saved by the time we receive a placement, but I'm hoping we'll be able to cover it ourselves.

That may be way more info than you wanted, lol, but I wanted you to know that you're not alone in feeling stressed about the financial burden that adoption places on your family.  It's definitely a pain, but I know (and I'm sure you know, too!) that it will be MORE than worth it in the end.
