My diapers continue to stink of ammonia. I've stripped 3 times now with blue dawn. The most recent was last week when I switched detergents. I went from BG to Charlie's. Last night I tried the regular fabrics wash cycle with 2 hot washes. changed it up just in case it was my wash routine. I store my dirty dipes in a hanging wetbag and when I open it to put them in the stink just about knocks me over. It's powerful and overwhelming. Does this happen with a trash can and Pail liner too? Or is it able to air out better? We don't have a lot of room for a trash can right now but were moving in 5mos and I plan to get one then. Will that improve the smell? Please give me hope!
Re: Stink issue is bugging me
Do they smell of ammonia when they are freshly peed in? Or just after they sit?
It's normal for them to stink after a while. It's not normal when a single pee makes them reek. You can rinse them before you put them in the pail, use some baking soda, spray with bac-out, get a pail freshener shaker, and wash every second day. Smell is normal when they sit - urea converts to ammonia. Oxygen can slow that down, so you can use a wet bag instead, or leave the pail lid open.
You can also bleach your diapers and see if it cuts down on the smell.
