I've recently decided that since I'm going to have two in diapers, I would give cloth a try. I got 6 BG pockets second hand for a great price. I also have a sample of a sunbaby and a giggle life bamboo coming to try. I don't mind the laundry, they're not leaking and they fit well. But, I'm really not liking how up close and personal I have to get with the poop. I knew this would be an issue for me so I ordered some bummis liners and I've been using those. They're working to keep the bulk of the poop off the diaper but they're so thin that I still feel like I'm touching poop when I use the liner to wipe the bulk off his bum. Then I have poopy wipes, and usually a little poop on the sides of the dipe. So I guess my question is, how clean do they have to be before input them in the pail? Do I have to rinse all the poop off the diaper and wipes? Also, when DS starts daycare in a couple of weeks, I was going to tell her to just fold in half and put it in the bag. Will the poop be horrible for me to deal withstand the end of the day? Thanks!
Re: CD moms-talk to me about poop
I just make sure all the chunks are wiped off the diaper. I don't rinse them at all. I have some staining but otherwise everything comes clean and the sun helps with the stains. I do use liners when I remember so I would say about 1/2 of his poopy diapers are pretty easy to deal with. MH never remembers a liner so if he poops after MH changes him, that's when it's worst (but still not terrible). I don't use the liner to wipe him though. I just take the diaper off and put it to the side while I clean him up. If I wipe any chunky bits off his bum, I roll them off the wipe and into the diaper to go in the toilet.
I can't speak to having a poopy diaper sitting in a bag all day waiting for disposal. I would see if she can at least get off the bulk of the poop so you just have to tidy it up later. A lot of times N's just plops right in the toilet with no wiping and almost nothing sticking to the diaper.
I really recommend getting a diaper sprayer. Bumgenius makes a good one, we have it and like it. I try to get the diapers pretty clean before putting it into the pail, or else it just creates stink issues for us. It's not going to be a problem for you to deal with poop at the end of the day after day care. Just spray it off and you're good to go.
We used to use the bummis liners, but found the sprayer to me much easier and effective.
Welcome to the dark side, you are going to become addicted to cloth. I promised myself that I wouldn't buy anymore diapers, and I just picked up two new grovia today. I couldn't resist.
for me the liners defeat some of the cost savings so we don't use them. I use a sprayer. It really is pretty amazing. I held out for a while and caved....SO glad I did.
If there is a little smear on the wipe they go directly in the pail. If the wipe has chunk then they are briefly sprayed too. As far as the dipe, I get all chunkyness off and most of the "smears".
If I have time I will rinse the diaper right away. I bring a plastic grocery bag in with me to put it in so no drips get on the floor on the way to the pail (in the garage). If I do not have time I will put it on the back of the toilet (in our master resroom). If there are dipes that need rinsing at the end of the day I do it that night. I never let poop sit in there over night. It/they get rinsed and into the pail before bed if not done immediately.

I just plop the poo in the toilet and put the diaper in the wetbag. If it is really bad, I let it "dry" in the diaper folded in half. Then later I use a spatula to scrape it in the toilet. I just couldn't imagine a diaper sprayer spraying poo all over my bathroom. My babysitters plop or leave it in the diaper. I check all of those diapers before I put them in the washing machine just to be safe. It really hasn't been that bad. I also use cloth wipes. Just a few cut up receiving blankets with the edges surged. I then spray a solution of water, baby wash, olive oil and tea tree oil on the wipe. It gets her WAY cleaner than traditional baby wipes and I can just throw those right into the wetbag with the diapers.
P.S. I only use the Flip system and BG 4.0 with a few of the Freetimes. I have never had a leak and they always come very clean in the wash. :-)
You should really get a diaper sprayer. It's a huge help. When I spray, I try to get all of the chucks and most of the smear off then put it in the pail. The only time I've had a poopy diaper sit until the end of the day is when my mother watched DS. At the end of the day I sprayed the diapers and none of them stained.
I scrape mine with an Ikea spatula it's easy and I don't have poop spraying all over the bathroom!
We use fleece liners that I made by cutting up fleece that I had in the house already but you don't really need them with BGs.
I find that poop left for a few hours will scrape of easier than fresh poop if it's not ploppable but don't leave it longer than you need to because then it'll dry on your diapers and thats not fun!
We are very lucky that 95% of DS's poop is plopable, meaning it doesn't stick to his butt and I can just turn the diaper upside down over the toilet and it "plops" right it.
Occasionally I have to dirty a wipe or two to get off the solids, and I spray those off allow with the diaper after I have a clean dipe on DS. I recommend taking your inserts out of the pocket shel before spraying. Fold the diaper in half, dirty side out, and spray each side of the folded dipe (always spray down, or you will end up with water everywhere). Then you can fold the diaper with the shell side out to carry to the pail, it keeps all of the extra water in and doesn't drip.
Sounds like you have a good spraying system all worked out!
Im a little concerned about poop spray all over myself and my bathroom with a sprayer but I might give it a shot if I decide to stick with it. So far so good. Im pretty amazed at how clean they are all coming out and how well they're holding everything in.
This for us exactly. I spray any poopy and put it straight into the pail. Honestly, I'm not really afraid of poop. lol. I'm very thankful for step step-pail. I always wash my hands thoroughly afterwards.
ETA: And J9Melissa swears by this tri-fold clip board thing to avoid messes. I don't have the link thoguh. I just spray closely and wipe down the toilet after.
