Whiny little boy!

DS is generally a happy go lucky kid, but lately he has been super whiny anytime he can not freely roam around the house i.e) if we put him in the playpen, jumper etc. just to grab a bite to eat for more than 30 seconds, and also when in his high chair waiting for food. Sometimes he bursts into tears. I know he just doesn't like being confined (and in the high chair case, hungry) but is this a stage that others are going through also? He is crawling and cruising and getting into everything, but are we teaching him to be a whiny boy? If I need to get something done, I will leave him, but I guess I am just looking to see what others have experienced. We are really hoping this is just something that passes!

Yea.. Mine does this too, and honestly I will ignore her because I know she's just whining because she wants to run a muck around the house. If I have to get things done, I want her somewhere where I know she's safe when I can't sit right there watching her kwim? 

I don't think you are teaching him to be whiny, no.  I think if you run them every time they whine at this stage, then they could easily pick that up as a cue just to get mom to come get them. 

The full on crying part that you mentioned he sometimes does, I don't ignore. I think there is a line between just being whiny and being really upset, and in those instances I do go and comfort LO. It's a balance, they are getting bigger fast and I think it's good for them to have some independent play time at this stage.

So funny that our LOs have the same bdays, and are now going through the same whiny phase. They must be soul mates :P

Yes, T is getting whiny but also in that separation anxiety phase. He's started to realize when I leave him in the gym daycare when I workout. T doesn't whine when he's in his highchair but I've always looked at their noises as some form of communication. T will crawl to us, rub him eyes, look up and whine when he is tired or/and hungry. I exhaust all the options before I ignore him: tired? hungry? wet? poop? hurt? needing comfort? Usually it's one of those things. But, I don't think you're teaching him to be a whiny kid. He's little, he doesn't have words yet, and just using his voice in any way he can to communicate with you. Yes, I think it's a phase. He'll mature and find other ways to get your attention
