Pointing question

I'm I suppose to teach him how to point or will be just do it on his own? I know that's a silly question. He waves and claps but doesn't point. I realized today Ive never really tried to get him to point...is that something you worked on with your LO? Is your LO pointing?

Re: Pointing question

  • C points at everything - I didn't teach him - he just picked it up.... I think its like waving - it's just something they pick up over time.

  • I point out things a lot to her and I'm not sure if that's how A picked it up. She started pointing more recently (maybe the past few weeks or so). I think it's just something they pick up like clapping.

  • DD just picked it up - I never taught her. She started pointing randomly at things and then when I noticed her doing that I started pointing more and just in the past couple of days she has really started to use it to communicate and points at whatever she wants me to get for her.

  • I never 'worked' on it with him but I tend to point to things when I'm showing him something. One day out of the blue he just started pointing.

  • I think I occasionally pointed at things.  She picked up pointing pretty early, before clapping (probably about 2 months ago).  I wouldn't worry about it though because it seems like all babies do the clapping/pointing/waving thing in different orders.

  • We haven't worked on it either.  One day, he just started pointing and now he points at everything.

  • We didn't consciously teach him, he just sort of picked it up.  And usually it's a whole arm point rather than a finger point, although he's starting to point with his finger more and more.

  • It seems that she just picked it up.  And now she points at everything.  When she's not waving.  Or clapping.  We do the 'ET touch' and she so gets a kick out of it!

  • I don't usually point but the speech therapist at our early intervention eval recommended that we start pointing more because that is the next skill DD should be picking up.

haha I bet she does! I'm going to make an effort to point at things now. I have seen him kind of do it but not often.
  • DS is not waving still, no clapping and he sure is not pointing.  I figure these are all things that we are going to have to keep trying to teach him.  Sometimes I wonder if I am not doing it enough though.

  • dd2 learned to point on her own.  it came after clapping and waving.

  • Em doesn't point yet. She also looks at me instead of the thing I'm pointing at when I point. I don't know, I hope she learns.

  • DS started pointing after clapping and waving. But like someone else said, he points with his whole arm, rather than a finger. We can't always tell what he's pointing at, but it's kind of hysterical because it looks so dramatic with the whole arm!
