C-sections

due date?

Hi!

According to my last MP my due date should be 7/12. At my first ultrasound at 8 wks the baby measured in at a due date of 7/14. So 7/14 is my offical "due date". My OB schedualed my csection for 7/11.

At my 20 wk ultrasound they said the baby measured in at a date of 7/10 but since its so close to my original due date they will not change my due date.

My question is....what if I go into labor before my scheduled cesection? How close to your due date do OB's usually schedule a csection? A feew people have commented to me that they are suprised my csection is so close to my due date.

Sorry if I'm confusing with all my dates :)

Re: due date?

  • My c/s was scheduled for 39w4d.  Most doctors won't schedule for anytime earlier 39 weeks unless medically necessary.  In my case the date was chosen based on when my doctor was on call and when the hospital had availability (the c/s wasn't scheduled until I was 37 weeks due to a breech baby).  I ended up going into labor at 37w4d.  At that point it became an "emergency" c/s, and they did it shortly after arriving at L&D.

  • this is going to be my first scheduled c/s.  It has to be done at 37 or 38 weeks due to medical reasons (very thin uterus with #2 and Pre-E that I usually get at the end)  But I had the same thing happen with dates..according to LMP, due date is 9/21 but measured 1 week ahead at 12 week u/s and they moved it do 9/13.  So now I worry if that is actually right, since the math doesn't add up.
  • My first scheduled c/s was at 39w4d.  My second was at 39w6d (I had GD with both and larger babies, so my OB was okay with going just before 39).  This one is scheduled for 39w6d as well, and I hope the baby stays put like the others!

  • The absolute earliest my OB schedules repeat c-section is 39w. He let me choose anytime in the 39th week, so I delivered at 39.5 weeks.

It's best to let baby stay in as long as possible, so delivering at 39w3d is perfect timing. Don't listen to others. Delivering before 39 weeks is not good for baby. The 7/14 due date is most accurate because it was done via ultrasound in first tri. Ultrasounds after first tri are not as accurate.

If you go into natural labor on your own before your section date, they will just go ahead and perform the section when you get to the hospital (unless you go into premature labor in which case they'll obviously try to keep you pregnant).

  • My OB sets the due date based on the dating u/s which is the first one he does (typically between 6-8 weeks) and will not change it.  The earliest he will schedule a c-section is 39 weeks unless there is a medical reason to schedule it earlier.  With DD, we were in the process of scheduling a c-section for 39 weeks when my water broke.  I had a c-section about 5 hours later (the hospital was backed up on c-sections that day), so labor simply bumped up the date.
