Natural Birth

curious about doulas and going natural.

This is all very new and I know its really early but after doing a little research I really don't see why other moms would even like to try to go natural. I guess Im wondering how bad the pain was and what helped you get through it? This will be are first child and Im wondering what others experiences were. I read about doulas but not sure if id like to shell out 1500-1800 for a doula. Has anyone ever had one in training? Is this a good second option? Is it hard to find a christian doula or has anyone heard of one? Im really new to all this and really want to consider my options.

  • I have also been curious because the two doctors I have been to seem to have no compassion of their job what so ever. I know they are educated but the one has made such petty stupid mistakes and seems to have a not so smart staff. Before taking a look into my chart he told me he thought my pregnancy was not "viable" at all and I was going to miscarry. He didn't think to look at that old blood work at all. And once he knew that he said "ok thats fine you were just early". He made me re-do blood work and said he would "call" well he never called and when office didn't pick up the phone he finally answered to say oh it was perfect and a bigger number he expected...uhm thanks for letting me know?

  • the cost of a doula really varies by region and how much experience they have.  In my area they run about $600-800, less for a student.

it sounds like you need to get a new doctor, and since you are so early in your pregnancy that shouldn't be a problem.  There are many reasons to go med-free, but many women have no desire to and that is fine.

maybe look into a midwife if you are wanting a doctor that will spend more time with you at the bedside, but many OBs are great and very compassionate, ask friends for recommendations.

I really think you should look into getting a new doctor, you should get someone who you feel comfortable with and will support you in whatever birth plan you chose. Also my doula was only $400, and I live in Canada. I think it depends on where you're located but I know here they are fairly cheap. Try contacting a few in your area to see what the price range is, or even if you can set up a payment plan if it seems expensive.. Everyone has babies their own way it's a personal decision, there is no right or wrong way. Just do your research and go with whatever feels right to you!
  • The doula we had for my first son's birth was very Christian... something I wasn't completely comfortable with (I don't consider myself Christian) but she was still an excellent doula.  And she only cost us $350.

We are using a student doula this time, because there were extra costs associated with the birthing center we chose.  She is free to us, but normally she charges $125.

  • Thank you all for your input. I found a birthing center yesterday that is connected to the hospital so Im going to look into that. I know I really need a new doctor and to get one pronto, Im also looking at the christian doula website. Thank you all for your insight!
  • The doula that I hired is in training, so she only charges $400 as opposed to the $600-700 which is the norm for our area. My midwife gave me a book called "The Doula Book." I think if you can find it, you should read it. It has a lot of great stats on why doula's are helpful and it's very informative as well. I'm a FTM too (due in September) so I don't have any experience to share but I'm very confident in my abillity to succeed with my doula and my midwife.
