Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Hernia experience?

Yesterday at Cari's 9mo check up, her Dr pointed out that she appears to have a little hernia under her belly button and that if it doesn't clear up by 12 mos, we will discuss surgery. The word surgery in connection to my baby scared the hell outta me. I briefly looked it up online and saw that babies can undergo a minor surgery or have the hernia fixed manually. Any moms out there have any experience in this department? Any Moms have LOs that have had to get surgery for this?

Re: Hernia experience?

  • DD has a small umbilical hernia, and the pedi hasn't mentioned it lately even though I still notice it.  We haven't talked about surgery; she said she's seen much bigger ones clear up all on their own so she isn't worried.

  • DS had one that cleared up on his own by 4 months. Most will heal on their own within a couple of years.

  • My 9mo old has a small one as well and it was a bit puffed out in the beginning after his cord came off but now it's gone down a bit and is barely the size of a pea in his belly button. I do keep asking the dr just in case but he says everything should be fine (he hasn't said anything about it being a hernia though, even though I know it is).

Hopefully your LOs will go away soon or get smaller!
