Baby Names

WDYT

of Carlin for a boy?

Both DH and our DD are stuck on Charlie, which I don't mind but don't love Charles.

Re: WDYT

  • Carlin (although I think of George Carlin) feels feminine to me. Like Carly and Lynn? Not sure why.

I have friends with a Charles but almost everyone only ever calls him Charlie. You could always just use Charlie, it's a solid enough name.

  • Hmm, yeah it does have a bit of a feminine sound... Plus it's a surname, which instantly makes me bristle. What's wrong with just Carl?

  • Or maybe Chase?

  • My grandfathers legal first name was Billy...why not just name your baby Charlie?

  • I know a boy named Carlin (after George Carlin, actually) so it doesn't strike me as feminine off the bat. It's meh in my book. I've heard better but I've definitely heard worse.

  • I agree with the posters saying Carlin seems somewhat feminine I will disagree with those saying to use Charlie as a full legal name. I am a fan of options and if he should ever want to go by a more formal name he would have one, if he always goes by Charlie that's fine too with a name where it's an obvious NN.

  • No It doesn't sound remotely masculine.

    Just name him Charlie.

This opinion always baffles me.  My full name is Mandie.  I've held professional positions and my name was never an issue for me, nor have I ever wanted a more "formal" name.  It's on my birth certificate, it is formal.

  • I really don't like Carlin, but think that Charlie is a great standalone name (much better than Charles, actually)... for a child and an adult. It's what my sister plans to name her second son. However, it cracks me up that your DD has a say in the baby's name! If my parents listened to me at 3.5 y.o., my sister would be named Sweet Pea ;)

  • I have to agree, it does sound feminine.

  • I've always loved the name Carlin.  I'm a big fan of Irish names, and I've always enjoyed its meaning (little champion).  If I remember correctly though, it's primarily a girls' name, although it's been used for boys as well.
