Beta Doubling Times?

I was just wondering what kind of scale your Dr uses for "normal" beta doubling times?  I got my 4th beta back today and it didnt quite double, but the beta calculator says its doubling at 53 hours.  My RE wants it to be under 48 hours.  I know its not that far off, but when I googled, most of the sites I saw said "normal" is 31-72 hours.

1st beta was 78

2nd (2 days later) was 198, so a doubling time of 35 hours

3rd beta (3 days later) was 887= 33 hours

4th beta (2 days later) was 1653= 53 hours

They told me today they wanted it at least over 1720.  Do you think this is something to even worry about?  I go back Tuesday for another one and I dont *think* I have anything to worry about, I just didnt get the best feeling when I hung up the phone with the nurse.

Re: Beta Doubling Times?

  • Doubling times slow down once your beta is over 1200.

My first doubling time was 59 hours, next was 30-something. According to Dr. Google,  normal doubling time for a beta less than 1200 is 36-72 hours. Over 1200, it is 72-96 hours. I think yours are probably just fine.

ETA: Why did they do the 4th beta? Your first 3 looked great, and now you are worrying! Sometimes more testing is bad. Smile

  • I would definitely NOT worry.  The time for a beta to double does slow down the higher it gets.  "Normal" is anywhere from 48 hours to 72 hours-so you're definitely in that range.  If I had your RE I would be a nervous wreck!

If todays number looked "good" to them, they were going to sched one for next week.  No u/s scheduled, just another beta for Tuesday.

Im going to try not to worry about it.  I was just excited to have an u/s next week because I thought todays number was going to be a stellar one.

  • My RE only does 2 Betas because he said the doubling times slow down after you reach a certain level.  My doubling time was close to 50 hours, and I am currently almost 27 weeks pregnant.  I am sure everything is fine.

  • Your numbers look great.  FWIW, my RE does betas until you hit 1500, then they schedule the u/s for a week out.  My third beta was 1376, so they said it was close enough to their 1500 number.  My numbers look very similar to yours, given the date adjustment: 1st (w/BFP) was 87, beta #2 (4days later) 560, beta #3 (2days later) 1376. • My RE wants to see a 60% increase in 48 hours. This is especially true once your betas get into the thousands. When I said something to my nurse, she told me that the internet is wrong and that a 48 hour doubling time is not what matters. Mine never doubled in 48 hours (see below), so I'm glad the office was never worried about things.

Doubling times slow down once your beta is over 1200.

Smile

I totally agree!  I had a vanishing twin between my first and second (doubling time of like 130 hours) so it made sense to do #3.  But even #3 doubled just outside the window (I think around 80 hours).  My RE was fine with it, and my LO as of Wednesday is happily wiggling all around my ute :)

I was so glad they didn't make me go back for beta #4 for just this reason.  It causes more unnecessary stress, and it's not going to change anything!

Severe MFI. Me: supposedly all clear but eggs showed vacuoles.

IVF #1 January 2012, ER Jan 14th: 34R, 27M, 23F. Day 3: 18 embies still strong. Day 5: zero "good," one "fair," the rest "poor." Transferred 3. None made it to blast or to freeze. Jan 28: BFN.

Lucky IVF #2: Transferred two beautiful day three embies on St. Patrick's Day. BFP on HPT 7dp3dt. Beta 1 (14dpER)=106; Beta 2 (16dpER)=140; Beta 3 (19dpER)=264! First u/s 4.17.

  • I wouldn't worry.  My RE only had my do 3 betas, but my third did not quite double.  It was over 1,000 though, so I think that's why it started to slow down.  I was worried about it, but everything turned out fine.  Five betas seems a little excessive to me, especially when you have had such great numbers.
  • My 1st beta was at 10 and I had 4 betas across 2 weeks.  For the 1st week my doubling time was 46 hrs.  In the 2nd week, it was 57 hours.  I'm about to deliver twins.  Your numbers look good to me.
