First SW visit...what to make for dinner? Updated

We have our first SW visit tomorrow for our home study.  She said she should be here 3-4 hours and stay for dinner.  I'm cleaning like crazy today!  :)

I'm at a loss on what to make for dinner though.  I don't want to fuss over cooking, but I want it to be something good.  Any ideas.  TIA!

Updated:  We survived!  It was fine.  She was super easy to talk to, we had lasagna (thanks for the recommendations) and we just talked like we had known her for a while.  All that worry wasn't necessary!  Now we can relax a couple of weeks until our next appt.  Thanks ladies!

  • She's staying for dinner?? I've never heard of one doing that at a home study visit. I don't have any advice, just wanted to say that I would probably keep it simple and maybe have something prepared that you can just stick in the oven and cook while she is there.

    Ditto... Dinner?! That's weird

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! Yeah, I thought that too, which is why I'm sort of freaking out about it now.  It's not enough to feel like she will be assessing everything in our home and lives... Now she's going to judge my cooking too!!! Ah!

  • I also find that odd.  I'd maybe make something today (lasagna?) and throw it in the oven tomorrow

  • I'd go with something simple like pasta and salad
  • I think it's strange, too, that she's staying for dinner.  Make something ahead of time like lasagna.  It's easy once it's all done.

  • I have never heard of that. Keep it simple and let us know how it goes.
  • I've never heard of that either, but each agency is different.  i would just ask her about any dietary restrictions, and then ditto what others said.  Make a casserole or pasta dish that can be made ahead of time, and then a salad.  Don't be worrying about timing meats and complicated sides.

  • I had three home studies. My LW had dinner with us every time. The LW didn't imply that we had to have anything for him but I was cooking anyways so I offered and he accepted... I just made what I had planned for the night anyways- the first time it was spicy sausage, greens, and black eyed peas. The second time it was pesto gnocci with fresh green beans and cherry tomatos. The third time it was stuffed chicken. Nothing big or fancy, just what we were having anyways... GL

  • Our social worker wouldn't even accept water from us; she brought her own.  Even though she's always here during mealtimes, she eats before or after and always politely declines when we offer.

That being said, I agree with the others who suggested picking a meal that has very little last minute prep involved.  You don't want to be fussing with dinner while trying to concentrate on the conversation, too.

  • Ours came at dinner time on a 95 degree day in the summer. She changed the time at the last minute so i had to come up with something fast.  I grilled chicken breasts and put it aside and made a green salad and pasta salad and garlic bread. it worked out fine and because the work was done early, kitchen was clean and it took 10 minutes to set it at the table.

She came for a post-placement visit the other day. i made muffins and she ate before she came so she never had one.

This was exactly us.  Like PPs said, keep it simple.  GL!

Agree with others, that seems odd.  I don't think we ever met with our social worker for more than 2 hours and the house visit was less than 30 minutes.  I would do a baked ziti or my DH and I do a great chopped salad with chicken that we could prepare before hand and only add the dressing right before eating.  GL and let us know what you made.
