Tdap in pregnancy?

I already refused it once but am now wondering if I should get it.  Of course the CDC says it's safe for pregnancy (but I feel like that's kind of their job to say that).  I just don't want to do anything to jeopardize the pregnancy in any way... Thoughts?

  • I got it in my third trimester since I already have a little one and we do lots of group activities.   Since my Ob doesn't stock it, I got it at a store pharmacy.   They had no issue with giving it to me.   I was told it's not recommended until you're 3rd trimester.

  • If it were me, I'd just get it right after delivery...and plan to not leave the house for a couple weeks (which you really don't do anyways). Make sure your DH and anyone else who will be in the house has already gotten their boosters ahead of time if needed.

  • I would also wait for third tri. Whooping cough isn't a risk to your pregnancy, it's a risk to your newborn. There's a lot less going on developmentally in third tri compared to first or second. It's probably not an issue, but I don't see a great benefit to doing it right now.

I got mine in the hospital after delivering because that's how they do it here. DH went and got his a few months before that, as did his parents.

  • I got it at 37 weeks. Like PP, I wouldn't get any vaccination at 9 weeks. I held off on my flu shot until 2nd tri, too. DH got tDap a year ago, because he casually mentioned to his doc that we were TTC & the doc told him he needed it.

My MW recommended against it.  I"m not in a high risk environment (my son isn't in school, I'm not around a lot of children, etc.) and my son is vaccinated against it.

To each their own but there have been tons of medications administered in pregnancy throughout the years that caused severe issues later on.  I don't take chances.

Actually, the vaccine is not a risk for your pregnancy or your newborn.  The reason they recommend giving the vaccine in the third trimester is that there is strong evidence that the mother's immunity is passed to the baby, and so has some measure of immunity from whooping cough right from birth, instead of waiting until the first vaccine at 2 months.  By immunizing the mother in the third trimester, it actually protects the baby earlier!

Ditto PP's by suggesting that everyone who will care for your newborn also get the vaccine (at any time before the baby's birth), if you would rather wait until after delivery.

  • DH and family members got it during my third trimester, but I got it after delivery and before leaving the hospital.

  • When I was pregnant last time the recommendation was not to get it until after the baby was born, so that's what I did.  I'm not sure what I would have done, but I'm pretty pro-vaccine and got the flu shot while I was pregnant so I probably would have.  Oh and DH got it and we asked the grandparents and my brother to get it.
  • This is exactly what I needed to know.  Thanks, ladies!
