I think my opinion is in the minority.....It seems they are a trendy thing right now and just about everybody uses them. However, I personally feel that they are dangerous. Even if they individual beads are knotted on, the string could still break, the bead come off and the baby could choke and die. Someone said they work because the heat of your skin causes essential oils in the rock to come out and they are anti inflammatory to the jaw and gums. If this is so, why not just take those essential oils and apply them directly instead of using them in a necklace that could be a choking hazard?
I never really got the idea while I was pregnant, but now I have been thinking about picking one up. I don't know anything about the amber ones, and while the slobber factor is pretty gross, I would rather have her yanking and mouthing something other than my hair, face, and shirt; and something around my neck can't fall to the floor.
I bought one for my DS and he wore it for a couple of weeks. I didn't find it made a difference at all and I found him pulling at it one day. I always had a fear of it snapping and him inhaling the beads in his sleep...I figured the fear wasn't worth it and took it off.
This one wasn't amber, it was wooden beads that were supposed to do the same thing. My DS has lots of wild, long hair that sticks out everywhere and with the necklace he looked like a hippie surfer so it was kinda cute!
They are not for the baby to put in their mouths - in fact, they are very small and will not go near their mouths. I might try it again sometime - they are supposed to be good for eczema as well.

Just wanted to repeat. Amber teething necklaces are not to be put in a baby's mouth.
