From what I've seen, a lot of readers are taking the "Are You Mom Enough?" title to mean that AP parents think they're better than everyone else. That's unfortunate, because that hasn't been true in my experience. I would imagine that the cover will negatively impact AP parents and extended breastfeeding. I hate that they're taking advantage of the "mommy wars" hot topic, but I guess they're creating a buzz and selling magazines.
As much as I recite the "Extended breastfeeding is great and healthiest for children!" mantra (which means so much from someone who quit nursing at 10 months), seeing a child that age breastfeeding does skeeve me out. I'm not one to use a nursing cover or wish others to, but I kind of don't want to see a kid standing in a chair sucking boob. Even if it is eating.

I find it offensive to moms everywhere. I don't care about the kid bfing, it's just the way they present it. The look on the mom's face, the kid standing on a chair, the words "are you mom enough?" It makes moms like me, who plan on giving bm past 1 year, look like weirdos who think that we are better than other moms.
Extended BFing and NIP are such controversial topics so they went with a picture that goes to the extreme for shock value. Why not show a one year old and his mom holding him while both look at each other. This picture will only perpetuate the stereotype that AP parents are freaks. I don't know what the article says but it makes me NOT want to read it. I feel offended by the picture.
I haven't read the article yet, but Mommy wars aren't cool. We all do what is right for our kids.
But seriously, there are WAY better ways to bond with a 5 year old than nursing!! I am a firm believer that there are certain things that you need to stop before your child forms permanent memories like nursing and diapering!

"A third category includes mothers caught in the middle. These parents try to achieve Sears' ideal of nursing, baby wearing and co-sleeping but fall short for some reason and find themselves immobilized by their seeming parental inadequacy. They suffer from what two New York City parenting consultants call "posttraumatic Sears disorder."
Here is a quote from the Time article that I love. I'll have to read the whole article later and blog about it.
I do think that the cover photo is so controversial that it does make anyone who does nurse look a little crazy.

It doesn't help that the kid looks like he's practically in middle school.
Seriously.
They mother and kid were on the Today show this morning and on TV he doesn't look half as old as he did on that cover.
IMO, she's an idiot. She's all for AP and extended BF which is awesome.. didn't she realize what they were trying to accomplish and how much of a disservice that cover does to the rest of the AP'ers or even just extended BF'ers?

I'm just gonna put this out there... She's kind of a young mom. I read that she is 26 and that the child is 4(I also read that the child was 3 and then that he was 5 so I don't really know.) In my perspective, she is showing immaturity in the way she is presenting herself. Her body launguage says rebel. I'm not sure how much of that was her idea, and how much of it was staged but she is the owner of her body so she does hold some responsibility here. I have not read the article, but when I see a young mother portraying rebellion and a kind of "I know better than you do" stance, it makes me think that she is imature and that is not the kind person most parents would want representing them or their parenting style. And I say that as being a younger mother myself.
I read the Time article today. The article actually has NOTHING to do with the photo. Nothing! It's all about Dr. Sears and his philosophy. It does mention the cover duo, but that's about it. I think Time just used a mom/nursling photo (especially one so provocative) to sell more magazines, which is sad. They could have shown a more reasonable approach to AP, but I guess that wouldn't have the 'net buzzing huh?
Me - 40, DH 34 Married 11 years, TTC since 7/09 3 rounds of Clomid > Vivienne born 5/28/11
TTC#2 since 01/13 - 3 rounds of Clomid, 2 IUI w/injectibles, moving to IVF
By using a photo of the kid standing, they went for the shock value. And it worked.
People aren't going to forget that cover and the feelings they had towards it. A perfect example is this jerk of a GP I saw the other day for the first and last time. He looks at my chart and asks me how long I'm going to keep BF'ing. I said I'm going to shoot for 18 months and see how that goes. He shakes his head in disapproval and tells me he keeps picturing me BF'ing a kid that's standing.
Yes, my kid stands. Get over it.

Why couldn't they go with THIS picture instead...I think the reactions from both spectrum of the argument would have been waaay different...
