Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Finger food questions

DS is 9.5 months but he refuses to eat anything but puree so we haven't done much with it.  To be honest, I'm not totally sure how to do it either -

Do you ladies literally steam/boil any food they try? If not every food, what do you steam and what do you just give them? Do you strip them of all clothes?

TIA =)

Re: Finger food questions

  • If I would eat it and it's not high in salt or added sugar, I will give it to my son. Those were my guidelines from 6 months on.

I don't steam or boil anything that I would eat raw. He gets most fruits (banana, strawberry, pear, peach, kiwi, grapes cut in half, cantelope, etc), and veggies (he loves raw sugar snap peas) that we eat. He also loves plain macaroni, edamame, corn, peas, small pieces of beef and chicken, rissotto... pretty much everything. He  doesn't eat a lot, but he does eat a wide variety of foods.

  • If you've made puree, then finger foods are easy.  Boil or steam veggies until soft enough.  It depends on the food.  I've also tried toast strips but she threw them on the floor.  You could also try frozen veggies, just defrost.

  • You're so lucky.  We've been trying mashed and chunked foods since 7 months and he gags on everything.  He loves purees but even rice cereal can get too thick for him.  Thanks for all of the foods though, it will definitely be helpful!

Whoa, I didn't make purees lol and I applaud the mommies who do! I just meant the good ol' Gerber jars =)

  • Try roasting sweet potatoes (cut like fries) and carrots they are like purees once they are in their mouth. I also slice apples or pears and boil them for just a few minutes (apples w/cinnamon) and he likes to feed himself those. We also recently started scrambled egg yolks.

    Good luck!

  • Some babies will tolerate self-fed foods that they won't if spoon fed. My baby generally hated being spoon fed, so we didn't do it.
  • LO here isn't big on them either.  He does however love him some Puffs, and boiled potato.  I boil a potato like you do for mashed potatoes, and cut a chunk up into bite sized pieces and he goes to town with that.  Besides those 2 things tho he is pretty uninterested.  Our pedi isn't at all concerned.

  • we give them anything we'd eat that isn't salty, plus some purees. I don't cook their fruit.
  • Our DD is almost 10 months and we are really struggling with food!   One day she loves something, the next day she throws it at us or feeds it to the dog!

She did love deli turkey, but apparently hates it now.   She loved sweet potato puree,  but when I cook one and give her chunks, she gags and pukes.

Don't dare try to give her a noodle....OMG she hates them.

    Tried various steamed veggies....no go.

Only consistent favorites are puffs, lil crunchies, shredded cheese and yogurt.

That about sums it up.  I figure they'll get there when they're ready.  DD is happy to pick up and eat pasta, shredded chicken, avocado, fruit, mac n cheese, etc.  DS....if it isn't on a spoon, he will have none of it!
